Cooling Fan

Hello, Today my cooling fan stopped working, while sitting in the car idling, the car overheated.
Does anyone have experience with the sensors or the fan itself and can point me in the right direction?
Thanks in advance for any help

cooling fan

This happened to me at about 30,000 miles. The problem was actually the power stearing fan that had stopped. This ended up shorting out the radiator fan. I could not find a fuse for it and had to take it to the dealer to diagnose and correct the problem. The power stearing fan is now on a seperate circuit. In the mean time I was able to keep my temp needle in the black by turning on the heater if I was creeping along or had to idle for and brief period of time.

check the fifth fuse on the 'under hood fuse box" from the front of the car to the back. is a 5 amp fuse.

thats the fuse for the ps fan. if your ps fan is binding it will blow that fuse, which stops the cooling fan from working.

if its ok, you will prob. need a new cooling fan assembly.
good luck!

Hey,
The power sterring fan was definately jammed up with sand and grime, freed it up with wd-40. The fuses were all good though. The cooling fan was still not functional nor would the power steering fan run. Dropped it off at the bmw dealer for service. Will have to deal with buzzing around on my '96 honda interceptor till tuesday. Hey ... that's not all bad

Just had the same problem. From the factory, the early MINIs have the powerestering and radiator fans on the same circuit harness. One or the other having problems will cause the the other to fail as well. According to the SM:"this happens alot".

They no longer make the original harness, but instead have updated to separate harnesses. $1300 to R&R. I was thinking that my extended warranty would cover. NO!!!!

The extended warranty folks will not pay for updated parts, so they only covered $750. I had to pay $100 deductible and the $450 additional for the updated part.

You'd think that something this serious and prevalent would have inspired a recall.
