I'm thinking about getting out of L.A. over Thanksgiving. One idea was to take my girlfriend to Coronado Island in San Diego. Having not spent much time in San Diego, I'm curious to hear any input from locals about the area. We're just looking for a place to hang out for a few days.

Thanks for the input in advance.

Dave

If you can get in/afford the Hotel Del I'd reccomend that, but I think it's a great place and it is close enough to Downtown that you can go there for dinner and entertatinment. Have you considered Catalina?

Dave, SD is my home-away-from home....Mum lives there. The Hotel Del is a very romantic place! And SD is FULL of great restaurants and pubs. Be sure to walk around the Gaslight area in downtown SD. And go to Balboa Park, too...lots of nice museums. If you go to Balboa Park, have lunch at The Prado....it's excellent! And drive through La Jolla, past the Cove...what a lovely drive that is!

Cheers!

My favorite place in SD is a little shop called GET IT ON across the street from the belmont roller coaster in Ocean Beach, but that's just me.

if you don't want to spend a lot I also like Pacific Beach, the boardwalk is great for cruising around and being a beach bum for awhile, you can even have fires on the beach at night, I loved that stuff back when I was 10 years old. Be carefull thought cuz a lot of the hotels there are very old so if you end up picking one of those you should spring for a suite if available to avoid being totally unhappy with your room.

The Hotel Del is liable to be booked unless you act quickly. There are plenty of hotels in Mission Valley and elsewhere, so hopefully you've got a room available. I'm going to Disneyland the weekend before with my outa-town brother, and I had enough trouble finding a room. I'll be around TK weekend, If you need company, or heck, there's always room at our table. Coronado has some nice shops across the Bay from San Diego downtown, and Orange Ave has some nice stores for walking about.

Go to the Gaslamp Quarter, lotta neat shops and eateries, with local theater stuff too, and if your lady is into shopping, Horton Plaza is good, and the waterfront has a shopping area - kinda touristy, tho. Go to the Zoo, maybe, and the Museums in Balboa Park. Driving - if you really wanna on a holiday, go east, young man, to the mountains - mebbe snow, tho. Clo is right about the La Jolla coastal thing, too. Let us SD folks know when you get here, and we'll see 'bout getting together, if you want.

Rob in Dago

Vanwall,

Thanks for the generous offer. I think we'll be ok. I'm planning this as more of a romantic weekend than trying do anything too thanksgiving related. The Hotel Del and the Marriot on Coronado Island both have rooms available.

My current plan is the following: Drive down Thursday (avoid the traffic on Wednesday night

Worst day in the world to be on the road Dave. More people travel on that week and weekend, than any other time of the year. Stay home if you’re smart.
