Hey all!

We're planning a drive down to Key West on Saturday, September 6th. Staying over is optional, but some of us are planning on doing so and I'll post info on room rates. Details still being worked on, and will be posted as they become available.

For you BMCers this trip would be in leiu of the September George and Dragon meet.

Post or PM if you're interested

I'd love to, but not that day....UM vs. UF in the ORANGE BOWL is that day...nothing, and I mean nothing will keep me from attending that game. Not to mention I haven't missed a home game in 13 seasons!! I won't be able to make the 21st meeting cause I'll be in Key West for a friends B-day.

Hotels $$ etc...

After some preliminary checking, here's what I found for rates:

Wyndham Reach Resort $179
Ocean Key Resort $148
Radisson $99
Fairfield Inn $89

Would be most fun if we all stayed at the same place, so how's about a vote? All of these rooms sleep 4... You can check out the details of these places by going to www.expedia.com and searching for hotels in Key West...

Here's a thought: Why not shoot for the weekend of August 30th? The following Monday is a holiday so we could make a long weekend out of it?

On the hotel front, what's the best location for a hotel? I would think we would want to have a nice spot. I haven't been to the keys before so I wouldn't know. Maybe some of you South Fl folks could chime in here with some advice.

Okay, I went out and look at the four you listed. I would go with one of the first two, either the Wyndham Reach or the Ocean Key. They both seem to have better locations that the other two.

When I was just in Key West I stayed in the Marriot Courtyard. Awesome hotel, and we got a very good rate, about $89. However that rate will most likely be higher in August/September.

I must say Key West is relatively small, so to me location isn't a huge factor, simply somewhere to sleep and party (after barhopping). I would be more concerned about price, especially if its a long weekend.

Keep us informed of which dates to look for... Aug 30th might be OK for me, but I might need to do some thinking ahead if we go then (I'll be coming with a full car of crap straight from NJ). For me the original proposed date would probably be best...

You guys want to open this up to the National Events forum, see if we can make it a big meet?

August 30th...

I can't do August 30th as I will have a guest in town for the 6th which was the impetus for getting a group of MINIs together for a trip to Key West... as friend has a MINI but won't have it with him as it will be in his garage in the UK!...

Rates actually shouldn't be too bad for September as it's not really the season yet. Most of the specials on the travel sites run through September 30th...

Making it national would be awesome... How many MINIs would drive so far for a 2 day stint though???

The Courtyard sounds good; is it within walking distance of Duval etc?

With more research:
Courtyard: 2 miles from Duval St.
Radisen: 2 miles from Duval St.
Fairfield Inn: 3 miles from Duval St.

Don't you think we need something closer? I know driving to Duval st. isn't an option because of parking and if you're drinking you're going to want to walk to your hotel. I'll dig around some more and see if I can come up with something closer but not to expensive.

PS: If I'm butting in too much let me know, I'm happy to stay where ever you guys decide.

We feel kind of partial to the Wyndham which happens to offer better rates on their site than on expedia... further, if we get enough interest, I'll get an events planner there to make us a proposal for a group rate and or amenities. The rate on expedia was $179, on http://www.wyndham.com was $159. This might seem pricey but it is only 1 block from Duval (walking distance) and the hotel has the largest private beach on the Key...

Also, if anyone wants to stay someplace else, our feelings won't be hurt! We can always meet up for the barhopping (crawling?)!!!

wynnona,
I'm with you on the wyndham, I'd like to stay as close to the action as possible.
Here are some others I found:

Hilton Key West Resort and Marina
$165-215
Front St.

El Patio Motel (built in the 50's, art deco)
$78 - $114
2 blocks from Duval

El Rancho Motel
$99 - $129
2 blocks from Duval

Key Lime Inn
$99 - $169
2 blocks from Duval

Key Lodge Motel
$99-$120
On Duval St.

I went to
keywest.com
and they had a bunch of links for differnt hotels. One problem for Expedia and Travelocity they tend to stick with just the big chains.

Well, minimotorin seems me 'n you are having a posting party in here !

Awesome list!

How about this, anyone interested in staying at the Wyndham can email me at cathy@browardminiclub.com and those who wish to stay elsewhere can make plans on their own and just let us know where they'll be. I'll see what kind of group rate I can get from Wyndham, and see what happens from there...

Watch out for El Rancho motel!!!

Yes it is in walking distance, but I stayed there over Spring Break, and the rooms are TINY, parking SUCKS and the owner is really strange...

Figured I'd join Davids posting party...

Yea Joe, staying at some of these smaller places you probably run the risk of an interesting spot to sleep in. But I figure that's what motoring in the MINI is all about, take the road less traveled and all that. See you this weekend.
