Got another day off and I plan on taking advantage of it. Looking to do another romp on New Years day, if anyone wants to join in. The proposed route would start off at Old Fort (exit 72 on I-40), taking US70 to US80. Running US80 up to Micaville. Turning right on 19E and following that to Ingalls. Then taking 194 to Linville Falls. From there I'm looking at 183 to 181 down to Morganton (just above exit 103 on I-40).

The route looks to be about 85 miles (over 100 if you go back to Old Fort). Of course this is just proposed and can be amended if someone has a better idea. I travelled part of US80 last weekend. Really nice twisties on the section, but some sand and gravel were evident, so this isn't going to be a speed run for anyone worried about that.

If anyone's interested we can set up a meeting time. Either reply here or you can email me direct at: moorlockx@aol.com

My wife and I are definitely interested. It'll take us a little over an hour to get to the start point. An early afternoon run would be great but we're flexible.

Sounds good. How's meeting up around 12 or 1 sound? I'm actually going to come up the night before and catch a motel room, since it's about a 4 hour haul for me.

Smokey4 and LJ live in the vicinity. Hopefully, they'll chime in on this as well. Weather's supposed to be sunny in the low 60's, so it should be a great day to motor. When I was up that way on Christmas day traffic was really light. Hopefully, it'll be that way again.

Speak of the devil and he replies! Sad to hear this! Knew you'd be familiar with the route. Any places of interest to check out along the way?

12:30pm would be great if that doesn't make it too late for you. I assume you'll be driving 4 hours back home when we're finished.

Time's not really a problem for me so 12:30 would work great. That'll give us some good motoring time.

And yes, I'll be doing the haul home afterwards, but that won't be a problem.

BTW - do you have a 2-way radio? If not, I'll try to bring an extra one. Nice to have some communication between cars for pitstops and whatnot.

Hey Bob, thanks for organizing a New Year's Run... I'm as good as there, perhaps with a copilot this time. We'll see. I'll definitely have my radio along. Looking forward to my first MINI event since the driving school.

Glad to hear you're planning on coming down. My day's off are few and far between so I try to take advantage of every one I get! After doing my Christmas day romp by myself, I thought I'd open an invitation to everyone this time around. I can't think of a much better way to bring in the new year.

Alright. Everything looks good for tomorrow! Sunshine, mild temps, what more could we ask for?

I don't know what facilities are at the Old Fort exit, but I'll be on the north side of I-40 at noon. Hopefully, there'll be a gas station or something right off the exit.

I'll have the radio set on channel 7 and my cell # is (910) 308-0563 if you need to contact me. I'll be leaving the store today about 4pm so you can email me up till then.

Let's motor!!

We'll be there as close to noon as possible. We do have 2-way radios and will set ours to channel 7.

See you all tomorrow...

Just wondering... are you thinking there will be a food stop along the way, or should my belly be full when we meet at noon?

I know I said I'd be there at noon, but I just wanted to make sure I was on time. Looking more at our agreed 12:30 for the meeting time.

If you want, we can eat something light before and then do a sit-down dinner after the run. After all the twisties, I know I'll be ready to be stable for awhile!

We're planning to have a small bite to eat mid morning before we leave our home, then have something a bit more substantial after the drive.

Once again, great drive, guys!! Glad those that made it out, did. Fun roads, but traffic, while not heavy, was slightly irritating. Guess I can't complain....it did allow for more countryside viewing (trying to rationalize, here)

Best New Year's day I've had in quite a while!!!

Moorlockx,

Thanks again for planning this! We had a great time and enjoyed meeting you and VAmini. I can't think of a better way to start the New Year!

We are definitely going to drive this route again!

For a little variation.....and I kind of wish I had seen it before the run.... Follow 80 to 19E like we started, but turn left there instead of right. Go down about 4 or 5 miles and hang a left on 197. That looks like a real interesting road. I was on Yahoo maps looking at enlargements of it and, lord, does it look like it has some curves on it!

Actually, it was a really nice day for a drive with temps around 60. The white stuff was only found way up on the mountain top.
