No Delete – This is Wrong

We all need to retract a post from time to time. Bad statement, wrong word, just something or may be forgot the big word that makes the statement.

Why is it we can not delete something we’ve posted - or am I missing something.

And if it’s only a limited delete kind of person kind of thing then Add me to the list, then delete me.

You can go into your post.....edit.........wipe out everything you originally typed. The only thing you will have left over is the title

Pat - If you need to delete something (a post or a thread) altogether just use the Contact Us form and we'll take a look. As was mentioned earlier you also edit your post as needed anytime you want.

Well this is funny. I just posted on a thread and after posting realized the computer was logged in under David's SN. I tried to go back and delete to be able post under my SN and guess what, no delete. Go back to finish reading new posts and immediately find someone else with the same thought.

It would be nice to be able to delete a post occaisionally as we share a computer at home and don't always realize the spouse is currently logged in before posting.

I have helped sort the problem a bit on MINI2 by having a different background color for each of us but haven't looked to see if that is an option here.

The primary reason there is no delete option is that we had users deleteing posts out of threads and then the moderators would get pointed at for deleting the post. So under the current system only moderators (and Vendors in VA) can delete posts. We just want a chance to review posts before they are removed, especially in heated threads.

If you find you need a post deleted, follow Mark's suggestion to contact us and we'll take care of the situation.

No biggie, just a convenience thing. I probably would not bother a moderator with it. I'll just leave the post from the spouse when it happens.

Sorry Mark, but I don't need you, Dave, Clover or who ever to look at what I want to delete and judge its merit before deletion.

That answer doesn't cut it.

How about a delete option please.

Then just edit your post. That way you can remove what you want. But if you want the entire post gone to make it look like you never posted to the thread, then it's going to take a moderator to do it.

VA = Vendor Announcements, not Virginia

BTW, when I come upon a NAM member's post which has been deleted by the member, leaving the "post has been deleted" message, I will oftentimes completely physically remove it, if it was clearly a mis-post. Otherwise, if I have questions or a problem with a post, I will move it to Under Review to run it past Mark, Dave, and the other Core Mods. We take post-deletions very seriously.

Then I guess I'll just delete it and just put a dot there if you're going to be so accommodating.

I don’t need the web police to tell me when I’ve not posted something correct Dave.

Pat - this isn't an issue of policing. Its a response to complaints we received in the past for appearing to over moderate. In many of the cases posts were being deleted by members themselves and the moderaters were questioned about it and, given the post was gone, had no way of knowing what had happened. We have provided you with two options to resolve these issues so I hope these will acceptable.

yeah, I was one of those who accused the moderators of over moderating over a thread that had disappeared in thin air, and got almost as heated as sandwave appears to have become.I posted a thread "freedom of speech on NAM?" BUT.........I don't think this is a case where the moderators are becoming Police,in fact I think their response here is appropriate, and I ,for one applaud their approach to this issue.jmo. maybe it'll make you think twice before submitting stuff ,yes?

Well I have an opinion too, and I'm going to state it. Whether you can delete a post or not is more or less irrelevant because everyone subscribed to that forum will get a copy of your post, and that's when the sh*t will hit the fan--if you are flaming someone and later have second thoughts.

Case in point. Check out this thread in the Marketplace between Mountain Top and Ducttape.

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ad.php?t=34105

Apparently Mountain Top posted something, and decided it wasn't very nice, so he went to try to delete it, but it was too late cause the recipient already saw what he wrote and dragged it out into the public--where it was now impossible for him to erase his mistake.

I'm not sure who is right in this situation, but if you think having the power to Delete is really going to make much of a difference, think again!
