hi guys i have a r59 jcw and the rear spoiler is stuck up i think it would be more cost effective to have the jcw fixed wing installed however, here in south africa dealers are unsure how to code and deactivate the active spoiler, im looking for some guidance on how about doing this?
The motor must have went. To code the rear spoiler they should know, make sure they read the install pdf. Make sure its a MINI dealer also. Auto atlantic, SMG MINI Rocks. etc.... BMW only dealers somtimes dont have access to the MINI we portal.

I would do the same if the motor went bad, they new part is the whole thing and a little pricey. I would go to the solid wing and get it to match my white top. I liked the two tone of the launch MINI.
active motor and mount ( no upper wing) ~$900 from us and then the JCW full wing is like $757
My rear spoiler has also stuck in the up position. The gonging sound is very annoying. Any suggestions on trouble shooting. Fuse? Wire connections? Are these motors prone to failure? No MINI dealer anywhere near me, 5 hrs away.
Thanks at least I will know how it is supposed to operate when I pull the boot panel off. I checked fuses but there doesn't seem to be a dedicated spoiler motor fuse.
Maybe you can try to disconnect what is likely a position sensor next to the motor, and see if that shuts off the "dong" sound. It may throw a dash light, but may get the sound off . . . who knows...
Thanks for the idea. I disconnected the position sensor like you suggested and like magic the gong is gone and the warning lights on the dash are gone. This is only a garage test so far. Will be driving tomorrow. Will let you know.
TG. your not just a pretty face. Thanks again.
The magic is gone. Garage test got rid of the gong & dash alarm. Backed out of the driveway this morning to go to work and as soon as I drove off the damn gong and dash alarm came back. Grrrr. :(
Going to do more tests with a friend tomorrow.
I'm sorry to hear that... We'll, please at least go into the settings and lower the gong sound level as low as it will go... Though maybe that's just for the rear park assist...
So my guess is that you only have two choices :
1 take it to the dealership
2 find a way to lower it back down and plug the sensor back on.
Update: My friend and I rechecked fuses and they were all OK. Checked the motor and the resistance on it was also OK. Started checking wires and found the wire bundle coming out of the quarter panel into the boot lid had been crushed at one time by a previous owner. We slid the rubber wire protector sleeve back and found 2 broken wires. One was the special wire for the satellite radio. (This would explain why I can't get satellite radio.) I don't use it anyway. The other wire was a small brown wire. We would have thought a red or a black wire. Reconnected the small brown wire and my spoiler now works properly and the dash alarms and the annoying gong is also gone. Positioned the rubber wire protector sleeve, with a lot of fiddling around so it won't get crushed again. Thanks again TG.
One one end, you fixed the problem, and top down life is back to normal
One another end, it's not a failure of the system, but a human error, and that's good news in terms of durability so far
Hopefully more information will come up on the active spoiler that when issues will come up we'll know more what to do...
I tell you what, if you find what type of grease to use on the spoiler folding mechanism, you let me know because. I'd like to keep this little guy working for a long time!
I talked to my nearest MINI dealer 500 kms away and they told me the motor is not available by itself. The whole spoiler, motor assembly is one piece and will have to be painted as it is only primed. Its a little pricey. Just an FYI for everyone.
