Harness Mounting

What do you think about mounting the driver's shoulder straps at the post for the rear seat shoulder harness? The height is just about perfect and lateral offset is ok. This could be a good autox and track day solution. I plan to use the TeamTech jet fighter set-up with the integral crouch strap - I was very happy with these during my SCCA SSC days.

Nice idea, I would like to see the final design. Getting something mounted to that bolt without modifying the plastic cover will be difficult.

I'm using the Schroth QuickFit for the MINI.

Yes it's not a road racing legal belt, but it installs easily and clips in and out very simply.

Harness

In the Chicago area, MCSCC has a pretty good Solo I/Time Trial series. I am looking for a dual purpose, Solo I and Solo II, set-up. Schroth is indeed a reasonable option although the low shoulder mounting point is not ideal for higher speed applications. A Schroth set-up that passed over a bar just behind the front seat might work. As you know the available harness bar/mounting kits are of questionable legality for Solo II. I'll investigate using the rear shoulder harness location, legally, too. Thanks

In MCSCC (Midwest Council of Sports Car Clubs) the Schroth quick fit harness is legal for all AX / TA (Similar to SOLO I) classes (*** not quite right pleas see below), PROVIDED it is installed according to the Manufacturers instructions, into a car that the Harness is listed for, per the sewn in label. Which Means using the STOCK seat, and the Schroth mountings to the rear seat belt bolts, (not the child safety seat anchors!)

The reason for this is that according to the Manufacturers instructions, Schroth has determined that the STOCK MINI seat is strong enough to use with out a harness bar.

You can not use the Schroth with a Racing Seat, as the manufacturer says very plainly not to.

My Harness / MINI are 2004. If you pass it over a Harness bar, you are not following the manufacturers directions.

Entrant is responsible for having the instructions to show to Tech.

Schroth is specifically listed in the GCR as allowable in TA / AX.
In the 2005 GCR it is in section 13.3

In the 2006 (not released yet, but circulating in draft form) GCR, it is section 5.7.1.1

*** The Schroth does not meet the MWCSCC rules for a convertible with a roll bar or cage. ***

Harness

Thanks for the well thought-out response. I am always a little wary of stock seats in an application they may not be specifically designed for. The Schroth set-up is probably the way I will go. Screwing around with the C-pillar trim panel, replacing the stock rear shoulder harness pivot bolt with an eye bolt, and hoping that the unmodified panel will fit, is more monkey business than I need right now. For the record, I have found MCSCC safety standards to exceed SCCA's - both in time trials and wheel to wheel.

The Schroth system is very convenient and does a nice job. Just make sure you have a full face helmet and do not lose the air bag in the wheel. The length of the belts will allow some stretch in a severe impact but for the most part it is a very secure system.

I have discovered that I was wrong about MWCSCC rules in one respect.

If the car is an open top, which for the MINI means the convertable, then the car is required to have a roll bar, and that triggers a different harness rule that the Schroth does not meet.

If the car has a "Not Required" roll bar, then the Schroth is ok.
