I am pretty surprised to see the standings so far, especially after Per's comments on the courses being pretty transition heavy compared to last year. Maybe the crummy weather yesterday played a role.

Regarding the results, which are now final I guess, the fact that the Mazda3 took the win is not shocking, it almost did last year. But what is amazing to see is a variety of other cars that came in ahead of the well driven Minis. This is in a class that was pretty much dominated by the Cooper for years. Definitely a shake up. I still think the weather on Tuesday had something to do with it.
GS results are up for the 1st day the first 14 places are .83 of the leader with a Spec- V in second. It doesn't look like the turbo is an advantage....

Anyway, I'm already anticipating next year, hopefully an 08 JCW in DS? :-)

Where any of the 17" wheel guys shifting to third? Interesting to note that the top two guys were on 16"s.
Thanks to sm2dan, I know that the tire gauge I use in the MINI needs to be replaced...it's reading 8 lbs. high, where it wasn't earlier this year. No wonder I was getting so much rollover at 43psi. Doh. I wish there was a calibrator that you could check these things on on a regular basis.

On Day 2 may first run had me bouncing the rev limiter for a long time on my first run. My 2nd run as soon as I shifted to 3rd I smacked a cone. I couldn't find a comfortable spot to shift safely so I just bounced it again on run #3 any didn't go any quicker. I was on 17s.
Per, I think the tire gauge calibration would be a great service that perhaps Bridgestone, Kumho or Hoosier could provide. Of course, I wonder if mine was reading incorrectly, though I wasn't rolling the shoulders too badly.

I took the three gauges here at home and check them against each other and they were all different by several pounds. The one I was using in Topeka was reading the highest. I've got a few Longacres on the way that have been freshly calibrated...I smell a small tech story coming up.
I was only bouncing the rev-limiter near the finish on my 45.1. Probably could have gone through that finish slalom a little faster in 3rd..but not much. Oddly enough, my 45.1 was 10th fastest (I think) but didn't move me anywhere from my 18th spot. Wow, I dug myself a seriously bad hole that first day (as did Kim, those friggin' cones on Day 1 cost her 8 spots.)

Ya know, I took two passes in the Bradley's Mini during the Test & Tune and they use the same gauge that you have (liquid filled) and it read really high. I was wondering if it was the actual pressure or not, so I lowered them a bit for my runs to what I thought was more normal. I think a tech article on gauges would be a GREAT thing!

The lack of grip was just astonishing! Granted, our car was moderately prepared for STX (wheels, tires (not shaved), 1.3 negative camber, swaybar, exhaust) but a fully prepared STX MINI would have still suffered!
Just for comparison: The 7th place BMW we keep up with just fine here at home. The Colorado WRX that finished 8 thousandths behind me is beat by 1.5-2 seconds at every race here on home turf.
Front wheel drive is an absolute handicap on that horrible surface they call asphalt! I see no good future for any MINI in STX as long as that surface is so slick.
Makes me think the moon like surface of Forbes Field wasn't so bad after all.
(Ok, venting over, now I've got to figure out a plan for next year...stock classes are calling again.)

I feel your pain, its a near impossible task for any Mini in STX, not to mention one thats not prepped/tuned at HPT. Anyway, why not go to DSP? I think with Thursday/Friday being the run time for DSP next year at nats, a Mini on 275/35/15's with unlimited boost would have a legit shot. I'd love to give it a whirl but cannot afford the parts/wheels/tires on my daily driven 07 MCS.
