My son is up there with the Kester Star Mazada team. He posted this on the local MINI forum http://www.metroplexmini.org/forum/s...ad.php?t=24287
3R wrap up
The belts came off and wiped out the idler pulleys so they could not be repaired. We lost a belt on Friday also and thought it was a fluke . . .
The track was pretty rough and we are wondering if that had something to do with it.
Anyway . . . we ran one of the fastest times of the weekend in the newly repaired 196. The brakes were great also. So we conquered some problems only to have new ones appear.
We will tear things apart and see what we find . . .
Sorry.
Randy
Sorry to hear about your belt issues. I know your wrenches will work it out & build you a bullet proof setup.
On to the next race where you'll do the MINI's proud. All of us MINI owners are your fans & we already are proud of your efforts & accomplishments.
Well done guys!!!

Nice clean cars . . .
Those nice clean cars are courtesy of fellow NAM member 'sdmidget' who is a volunteer crewman for the RSR team. Steve (aka sdmidget) has taken it upon himself to make sure the cars are spotless before they see the track.
Thanks Steve, for a job well done.

. . .and thanks to oompaloompafive7 for posting it!

We use tensioner straps. Unfortunately, the belt took them out. The straps are a good idea but they don't work very well as they are 'in harms way'.
The other problem is that during a race everything is so hot it is very hard to get in there, remove the remains of the old belt and install a new one.

You use the ones like this one http://www.detroittuned.com/products...20070112214410
I am not sure how they could get caught up in the belt?

Anyway . . . 3 for 3 failures speaks volumes. We need to come up with a more positive stopping device. We are working on it.
Since this has not happened in a year and half, we really haven't needed to focus on it. We will now.
Randy
You're welcome !!

That is exactly what we use. The cable gets pulled out of the ferrule allowing the pulleys to contact each other. I guess when the belt comes off at 7000 rpms the forces are beyond the capability of the strap.

Looks to be a much better design.
randy: if you would like to try the Minspeed tension stop, give me a shout. i'll send you one. a buddy of mine (mct) removed his when it made a horrific noise while on the track. no one knows why it made a screaming noise. i decided not to install mine and went Detriot Tuned. i guess that doesn't solve the problem either since i rev to 8k. pete, at Minspeed is a good friend and sponsor. i don't know if this is better than the DT stop, but i'd be happy to send you one to test/evaluate.

I just found an alternative to the Detroit tuned tensioner stop.......http://www.minspeed.net/TSB.htm
