Another second place for Octane MINI at Shannonville
Another second place for Octane MINI at Shannonville
Searing heat welcomed the competitors to Shannonville Motorsport Park, located approximately 150 km. (90 miles) east of Toronto, Ontario for round #4 of the Ontario Touring Car Championship, the DAC Trillium Trophy 1-Hour event on July 15-16, 2006.
The Octane Motorsport MINI managed to set fastest lap in class in qualifying, by a margin of 7/10th of a second over his closest class competitor.
Sunday’s race started after lunch, while the heat peaked at 32 Celsius (90 Fahrenheit). We had a terrible start, as we were boxed-in behind a car that was blocking us. As a result, we moved back to second position right away. This brought hard racing as the 2 class leaders were bumper to bumper for the first 7 laps. We had to reduce our pace and let him pull away as the car was starting to slide too much and the tires were overheating. The John Cooper Works MINI Cooper S performed flawlessly; we had a good set-up but we had to carry an extra 80 lbs. in reward weights over the weekend, due to our past success. In these heat conditions, the mandatory smaller 205 section width tires have a hard time keeping-up
The class leader managed to pull a 13 seconds lead by the time the 1 minute pit stop round started. We slowed down, trying to conserve and cool down the tires, but we weren’t going to let him go before attempting to reduce his lead. So the chase started back again and the #47 orange MINI went on a mission to catch the VW Golf. The gap started to shrink by 1-1.5 seconds a lap. With 2 laps to go, the gap was down to just over 2 seconds. Unfortunately, we needed a few more laps to pass him. The JCW MINI Cooper S ended-up finishing 1.3 seconds behind the winner. The Octane Motorsport MINI was classified 6th overall out of 22 starting cars.
This result and the team’s consistency this season proved worthwhile, as we were able to extend our lead in the championship by another 75 points.
Next race in the championship is a stop at Mosport International Raceway on August 12-13 for the 5th round of the Ontario Touring Car Championship. The 1.5 Hours enduro is a race where pit stop and refuelling strategies will play a role in the final results.

Nice job! At least I know it wasn't just me sliding around, couldn't quite get back to my qualifying lap times, but Vic pulled out some great ones and even led Perry for awhile.
It was another fun weekend with you guys, see you at Mosport!!!!

Phil,
You have PM!
Sorry, no video this time but pictures coming shortly.
Tony, the credit all goes to the crew. We actually had a little hiccup on Saturday as we threw blades from the plastic fan. The surrounding damage was minimal but could have been worse. Nothing a trip to the local dealer couldn't fix. Lucky day, they had one in stock!
Not sure how it happened; may be it got damaged while we were doing maintenance surgery last week. More on that later...

, I believe I passed him earlier in the run,
FYI: the FAST yellow and blue Z06 were racers from Wisconsin, you see me move over for them in the first run session, at about 6-7 minutes in the video
