When I got my suit I asked what the legal way to sew on my patches and I was told that they must be backed with a Nomex or other flame resistant material, then sewn on with same type thread, NO iron-on allowed,
and ONLY sewn on the outside layer of the suit, not with a sewing machine that goes all the way through all the layers.
I searched all over for the thread and never did find a spool, only found large comercial quantities, so I took it to an alteration shop and just had her hand stitch them on as they were, I read that the iron-on types were flammable and that's why they want a backing,
A new suit feels fun doesn't it ?, Manuel

Hello Red Fury,

The patches shoud be sown ONLY with regular cotton thread,
in case of fire they should just fall off, the reason for that is some patches have rubber or glue on the backing, that coud burn thru the suit.

We have another business www.polepositionusa.com for racing equipment,
I have a box full of patches, wich ones are you looking for, I will be happy to send you some free of charge.

Thanks
Victor

Great topic Phil
I got two mini wings to put on my suit last year. I gave them to my seamstress to sew on with cotton thread as should be done. When I got the suit back she informed me they were iron on so she did. I never did check to see if it would pass tech, but I guess not.

In the 25 years I have been racing, I have never had anyone at Tech really inspect how patches were applied to my suit. I am not saying it is not done I have just never experienced it. As noted above cotton thread should be used and yes the theory is the patches will "burn off". Greg, I don't think Tech would/will be an issue. I too have the Wings (with glue backing) on my suit but they are sewn on (just to the outer layer as noted above).

I think it is really important to have 3 layers of protection.

Ok.Ok yes I know I need to drop 10-15 lbs......

Here is some additional info on Racing suits

You can sown the patches thru the 3 layers with cotton thread, the thread will burn and the patch will fell off.

regarding embroidery on the suit, make it small or apply a patch with the embroidery on, if the embroidery has to go thru the 3 layers, then use an additional nomex tee, nobody want their sponsor tatoed on their body, right?

Regarding washing the suit, dry cleaners is ok, if you washed it at home, use very little soap and absolutely no fabric softeners, as it takes the fire retardant properties away. It is always best to hang it to dry, no machine dry.

Let me know if you guys have any other questions

If you iron-on a patch, or sew directly through the layers, or sew on a non-backed iron-on, the suit is not legal under FIA regulations and SFI ratings are voided, and SCCA and most of the other groups follow FIA for the basic guidelines,
but nobody ever checks anyway until you get to the top levels, they just look at the dates and SFI or FIA rating,

It is ok to sew a patch on thru the 3 layers.

I have sold over 500 suits thru our other business www.polepositionusa.com

We have supplied racing suits to professional teams and week end racers, we sold Stand 21, sparco, momo and Puma, and we have gone thru their training and factories.

When they put the suit together they have to sew thru the 3 layers, so what is the difference if you have to sew thru the 3 layers to put the patch.......

Here is another piece of info, what protects you from fire, is actually not the layers, but is the AIR trapped between the layers, so the more layers the better.

Always here to help
Victor
