What type of helmet? SA or M
I'm interested in getting my own new helmet for use in my MINI. I will mainly use it for Autocross and maybe some track days (nothing professional or anything) here in Nebraska. The helmet has to be snell rated but I don't know if I should get a SA, or M. There is quite a price difference between the two. I don't know if it would just be better to buy the SA one so I know I can use it for whatever or save some money with the M. Has anyone been to a event where they require a SA? Anybody have any ideas, thoughts? Thanks
We have a pair of Pyrotect open face helmets.
Very nice, not too hot, and the liner removes for washing.
Unless you need a full face, race set up, I usually go with open face. Makes a big difference in the middle of summer!

M is acceptable for autocross and some track events. Some track events are requiring the SA rating though, and the SA is also good for autocross. If you buy SA then you are pretty much covered for everything, but they are a bit pricey. If you know what group you'll be doing track days with, check into it and you might get away with the cheaper M helmet.

i kid. this years helmets should be worn our by the end of the season. go bo!ok. a serious answer to your question. let's start w/ the difference between SA and M. SA helmets have a better protection against fire. not a significant danger w/ a motorcyle. the impact resistance requirements are the same for both types. from a safety standpoint, the call is yours, but the chance of a fire in an autocross or DE is not great (but does exist!) the main thing to look at are the requirements of the sanctioning bodies for which you "might" run. better to buy once if you might run w/ someone requiring an SA. also beware of "deals" on line. most of the discounted (sale) helmets have an earlier expiration date. bottom line.....are you buying the helmet to satisfy a requirement or keep your head intact if the unforseeable happens?
If you are looking for a Helmet for the track days at the end of the month I would suggest SA rated. That is why I got the new helmet that I had at Karting a few weeks ago. The SA is more expensive true but I know Motor Sports Park Hastings (MPH) requires SA
SA is also tested for multiple impact resistance while M is rated for a single impact. No real difference between the designs, just the testing and certification costs.
You can get an M rated open face helmet for around $100.

SA also is fire retardent and most driving courses require SA rating. I just got a HJC AR-10 from Soloracer.com on sale for a very good price with a NAM discount too. Very happy with it!

well I did it I went for a Pyrotect full faced SA2005 flat black from pitstopusa.com for $250. I figured this way if I ever do go to an event or whatever that requires a SA2005 then I'll be good to go. So thanks for all your input. My head should be all safe and sound for a good while now.
