Italian Job Opening at King's Dominion

I have heard that the Italian Job ride at King's Dominion is due to open April 1st, 2006. This seems like an excellent idea for an event and a wonderful opportunity for us Richmond folks to plan an event.

There are several clubs nearby that would likely join in the fun. Moorlockx down in NC brought this whole idea up to me and I think it's wonderful! (Thanks, Bob!) I'm sure I could entice Paul! in DCMM to round up some folks too... plus there's a nice group of MINIs in Virginia Beach.

Does anybody know anybody at KD? Or we could talk to their press department.

Ideas? Thoughts?

Yes, Paul and I have spoken about this before... but now it's starting to seem a whole lot closer!

I know Paul was supposed to be checking into this, but from the posts on the DCMM forum, I get the feeling they've really got their hands full trying to organize the '06 Dragonrun, on top of going through a leadership change. Another reason I mentioned this to Deb is the fact that your group is right there. You would have the easiest time doing the legwork required and would know the area better than anyone else. I think both events could benefit if they focused on the Dragon and you took over the reins on this. Apologies if the idea stepped on any toes.

Let me know what y'll come up with (time and date) and I'll see if I can get this group rolling enough to make a run up there.

Hey, people the AtlantaMINIS plans to bring a group up for the opening. We were hoping they might do something for the MINI groups like Kings Island in Cincy did last year. If you hear of anything please pass it on. So April 1st? got to get that on the calendar.

Hi Deb

I am sure DCMM would want to come out for this. I am not sure we are up to taking the lead in planning anything more than a caravan for folks to come down and meet up with the Altanta, NC, Hampton Roads etc. guys. This could be a really great little get together of East Coast clubs prior to the Dragon. I would also check with the NEMINI.org group -- they motored down to Baltimore for lunch not so long ago and would probably be up for coming down.

Thanks, Jen as we're the closest, it's probably easiest for us to take point. Plus I know you guys have your hands full with the Dragon plans.

Thanks for the info, Cajun... I'm on it.

Hey, people, I spoke with Susan Storey with Paramount. She said the new coaster "The Italian Job - Turbo" will not be open to the media or public until about the middle of May, at least. That would put it after the Dragon and would make for a full calendar for the month of May considering you'd have the Dragon May 4-7, then Mother's Day the 14th, Kings Dominion hopefully after that and then Memorial Day on the 29th. The actual opening, and I'm guessing, might very well be that Memorial day weekend.

I reminded her of the success of the opening at Cinncy with their MINI promo and she said she would keep us in the loop. Here's hoping they have us all in mine for a great promo. Maybe someone more local and have a personal contact to get the ball rolling. I'll be glad to help in whatever way I can but I am in Georgia

Whose contact information did you provide her for keeping us in the loop?

I made the trip to King's Island last year and had a great time.

I would be glad to make the trip to Richmond.

Thanks
George

If you want her to keep your group in the loop as to what is going on and when, just drop her an email with your groups name and who to contact. She replies promptly.

Gee, that's different from what I was told, but it sounds like it's from a more "official" source than who I talked to. Sure hope it isn't Labor Day...they're sure to be more than packed that weekend!

Any update?

So I've seen all the ads they're running on TV in the DC metro market for the Italian Job ride. Seems like a disconnect, because they only mention the park opening day of April 1st (yesterday) and not a separate date for The IJ ride.

Has anyone heard from them about a possible MINI event timed with the grand opening?

Thanks!

I guess I need to call again... I think they're behind schedule.

I've called and been given a different date each time... the last date was the weekend of the Dragon (which I'm going to). Hopefully the date will be moved out of conflict with the Dragon so we can do an actual event...

Here is a link to the kings dominion richmond site. It looks like it's coming.

Shouldn't it be called the "Supercharged coaster?"

When you hear a date please let us know. I'm sure we could get several members of Phillymini to head down.

Absolutely! That's just a short hop from here. Did the ride in Toronto at Canada's Wonderland - it's a blast!

Any updates as to an event? I know there are a lot of ads on TV promoting it, and new coke cans promoting it as well...
