PKD IJ opening update....

I swapped some e-mail with PKD via their web site and got a reply that they are very interested in an 'event' for the ride opening....but no date.

Locally, Kroger is running a discount promotion and they have the IJ listed on their promotional stuff, with opening 'mid May'

so it is consistent....not specific.....but consistent

The '07 Mini's are Turbo charged, not super.

Count on some participants from M2C2 as well.

I've been talking with Twister & it seems like the best course of action (given the unpredicable date issue) might be to set an event for June or so... when we're sure it will be open. Any thoughts on that?

I'm guessing it's behind schedule & supposed to open as soon as it's done... LOL (Otherwise they'll have lots of annoyed people who came for the coaster because of the heavy advertising they're doing and will find it's open date still TBD.)

Though we can always have an impromptu mini-event (get it? LOL) when we find out the real date...

There's not really much sense in setting any date until we can get some sort of confirmation for the opening. Seems to me the better course of action here might be to maintain close contact with whoever Okeefe has been talking to. That way you can be sure of when the ride will open and maybe lay the groundwork for the event as far as what the park would be willing to do for us.

keep DCMM in the loop as we have a few members that would love to caravan down to this. Unfortunately Paul has been re asigned down to Florida fo a while. The good news is that an Aussie (me) has taken over the role as the DCMM co-ordinator so please keep me in the loop for a contact point into the DCMM club..... This KD ride sounds great

Yikes! That's only 2 1/2 weeks away and it's going to be Memorial Day weekend!

Anyone up for this? If so, we'll need some info fast.

I'm not going on Memorial Day... okay, scratch that... I would be stupid enough to go even though I hate the crowds. But there is still no local news on the date, just an ETA. I'll see if I can get something more concrete, but as for a real event... I think we need to look at June.

I thought when they did this at the other Paramount park, it was actually an orchestrated event with Paramount leading the way and MINI owners were invited to participate. So I don't know that choosing a day for THAT type of event is within our reach.

However, we could always plan a second event for the MINI clubs in the region, right? But if anyone hears about the Grand Opening event, certainly let us know!

IJ ride at KD VA

I e-mailed KD again asking waz' up?

The reply:

****************************

Thank you for your email to Paramount's Kings Dominion. The grand opening of the Italian Job Turbo Coaster will take place on Saturday, May 27, however the park is planing to host a MINI event later in the summer. You can contact me at susan.storey@paramountparks.com for further information as we plan the event.

Have a great day.

Sooooooooo

I guess they don't want us on opening day...but if you want to ride the ride...that's the day.....

We were at KD a couple of weeks ago and the ride didn't look to be anywhere close to being finished. While the track was in place, they had a load of work to do around the supporting structures. I'll be surprised if they actually get construction done for a 5/27 opening.

An event a little later in the season sounds like a safer bet - hopefully KD will do something w/ the local MINI clubs.

From the sounds of it they are planning some type of delayed "Grand Opening" including the MINIs later on. Sounds like a step in the right direction.

I'd still be kind of interested in going up for opening day if it indeed opens the 27th.

The company that owns Cedar Point just bought up the Paramount Parks link. I wonder how this will affect the rides as they are themed off of Paramount owned movies.

This is the final info on KD:
Grand Opening - May 27th
The only coordinated event scheduled with any MINI groups is the MINIUSA's Minis Across America which will stop at KD on Sept 2nd. It is a one day even with no special promotions. We are all on our own.

The AtlantaMINIS group has decided to pass on any trip up this year. Any of you guys going, let us know how much fun you had.

We will post in that thread a central meeting place and caravan from the DC Metro area and a meeting place at Kings Dominion for those coming from other points.
