We have had the engine light come on in the center counsel gauge where other warning lights are. In the past this has happened and it also put car in limp home mode. I was able to use my cheap OBD scanner and see simple codes as well.
During recent trip and engine light came on only in the over steering wheel gauge. This was because the brake vacuum pump failed so I had no brake boosting. I also tried reading code but because it was only steering gauge and not center one it said no engine code was found. Replaced the pump and the check engine light went off after few miles.
Drove for few days and then the steering gauge engine light came on again. Car was still running fine and never went into limp mode on short drive home.
What is the difference between these two lights? Why does only one show codes? Maybe a better BMW OBD reader would read both?
Yes, you need a MINI specific reader. Once you scan it fully you will need to write down the codes. Clear them all and drive the car and see what comes up after the second scan so you can see what all active and permanent.
If you dont do that you might see older codes that were never cleared and they dont apply now
