Been looking at 2015 CMS All4’s and almost all of them have crusty black & dingy looking exhaust tips. Most of these cars are likely one owner or lease cars as they only have between 25k & 30k miles.
Is this something to be concerned about? I’m not familiar with the Prince N18 engine but is this typical?
Well, that won’t be the case for my MINI....obviously, all it takes is a bit of effort keeping the exhaust tips clean! Good to know however that this is typical for turbocharged cars.
They all do that, when the engine is cold, the Engine Control Unit adds extra fuel until the engine warms up. This shows up as soot on the exhaust tips. I just wipe it off with a rag, I have never had a stubborn deposit on my exhaust tips. Maybe it's because they don't salt the roads around here.
0000 steel wool won’t hurt them. I use the stuff to clean glass. Also use it to remove surface rust from blued steel of rifles and pistols.
thanks, I’ll try this, mine are all carboned up as well, it really bugs me....although at this point, they pretty much look like black exhaust tips which actually looks pretty good with the Lt. Coffee/Carbon Black paint. Ha ha
Using steel wool on the exhaust tip isn’t a good idea - rust will eventually start.
this my tip with 61k miles.
I recently bought the car and thought a simple run down with chrome cleaner would work. It didn’t.
No, they will not rust they are stainless steel. Your tips have not been taken care of and are ruined. You can buy new tips at the dealership, just tell them you need “beer can” tips.
I detail cars and know what I am taliking about. If you take care of your car and ceramic coat the tips the carbon washes right off at wash time.
All MINI’s have black tips because they are tuned to run rich and that helps provide the “burple” sound when you back off the gas.

It is a known fact NOT to use steel wool on SS. It is the steel from the steel wool that embeds and rusts.
