Trying to get a bit more top end for highway (K&N Filter and JB+?)
Hey guys,
I've been sifting through the forums the last few hours and concluded the best bang for buck is to change the Air Intake and add the JB+.
I have a 2014 R60S and even though it's great at under 50mph, it's horrible on top end on the highway (i have my foot down halfway in 6th gear to maintain speed).
I don't want to spend too much money, so Im thinking of getting:
I've seen some people talking about the RU-1540. Anyone have experience with both of them? Does the RU-1540 perform a bit better? i assume it would need some additional 90 degree tube? Would the MAF sensor still stay where it is in the stock position?
For the JB+, anyone have any check engine light issues? I'm assuming it's pretty safe to use.
After reading a bit more, the hot topic (pun intended) is whether the CAI (hot air intake) really makes much of a difference over the stock one. I guess I'll just get a drop in filer. Need to decide whether to get the K&N 33-2936 which is oiled i believe, or get a dry one.
I live in Canada, so I am trying to find a local dealer that carries the JB+, but looks like i have to order it online.
Drop in filter is good, we have them in stock. I had no oil / filter issues with my BMC factory oil filter on the r52 Cooper ( came oiled in the factory kit by MINI ).
Now if you use and open filter , like RU-1540 you will get more sound but you will get hot air from the engine bay and the filters tend to need to be cleans more often, they get dirty easy.
Pipercorss is a foam filter and is light oil. Other options below.
While an ECU tune sounds much better, it also involves more time and work. The JB unit is plug and play and sounds like what I need. Not sure how much gas mileage I will lose after
Use sport mode in situations where you need more instant punch. I have no issues with my car on the highway, are you sure yours is running properly?
I'm not sure why, but I don't have sport mode button on my 2014 r60s. I do have the DS mode when you push the stick left into tiptronic without touching the paddles (I'm guessing it's kinda like sport mode?)
Anyway, I came back from the dealership for something else and they said it is running properly. Maybe I'm just used to my old Mazda 3 sport with a 2.3L engine. Had no problem with pickup at any rpm. I also had a CAI on it.

DS is what my dash shows when sport mode is toggled on. Sounds like that's the method on yours. You don't notice a difference when in DS mode?
Sport button / Toggle is an option in Canada. Comes with the sport package with the slightly lowered and stiffer springs. They did change it on the 2015's, but you still need to buy it as an option.
