Question Transmission Upgrade?

Hi Countryfolk,

Kowalski (my 2012 S ALL4) has had many modifications done to it. The car has got some power, it can now turn without rolling over on itself etc etc.

One thing that really annoys me with highway driving is the revs being so high. At 80mph I'm over 3k rpm and at 100 that's coming close to 4k. Are there any transmission swaps that would work with this car to bring those revs down to a reasonable level? Or how about an electric switch to cut in / out an extra overdrive gearbox after the transmission like the old Triumphs had?

I'd love to hear all of your thoughts!

Thanks,
Kyle

Don't understand your concern with 3K or 4K. While not a MINI, my miata turns 4K at 80 mph and 5K at 100; with 200K miles on the stock untouched OEM block. I would expect the MINI to be as well engineered. So what is the concern? Small displacement engines need the revs to make HP, and well engineered engines are not hurt by revs.

I am surprised you are over 3k RPM cruising at 80 mph. I sit at about 2,200 RPM cruising at 70 mph and a touch under 2,500 at 80 mph.

Could it be the difference between FWD and AWD or manual vs. auto?

Obviously, taller wheels/tires would help lower the RPM by requiring fewer revolutions to maintain the same vehicle speed but perhaps not enough to address the issue you are having. (Not to mention there are limits to what you can safely do with bigger tires.)

wow, your rpms are high in comparison to mine (12 cmsall4 auto) no mods

Im at 2200rpm @ 75mph and not at 2500rpm at 80mph. Dont know 100mph yet.

How much excess weight are you carrying? Is Sport mode on?

Sport mode or weight wouldn't change gear ratios. I even have 19" wheels which shouldn't hurt. And it's a manual - ALL4. I don't think the gear ratios are changed between the FWD and ALL4.

i will have to check, but i think those numbers are close to mine

i do remember that 6th gear @ 4,500 rpm = 109 mph = max speed during break-in

my cms all4 manual has the 225/45-18 tires with OD of 25.9" (pirelli p7 summers)

Sorry, didnt realize you had a manual. My only reasoning for weight was in seeing it change my rpms by a few hundred with a full load in MINI (1000 lbs)

For alternate gear ratios, there is a company that makes custom sets in Ohio, I forget the name, but the Lancer Evolution boards know of them. They do a little of everything on transmissions and they're GOOD. I'm uncertain of countryman, but a guy at work had them rebuild, polish/debur, and cryo his 500 Abarth gearbox. I won't see him for a few days but I'll grab the shop name.

I know that there is a slight difference in where the RPM's sit at 75mph in our Justa CM 6MT vs. All4 6MT. We also noticed when we had a loaner that was an Auto All4 the rpm's were lower at the same speed as our 6MT.

I'm still stock (well, BOV spring) and my '12 ALL4 manual runs the same revs as Kconner5. Sitting on factory 17's
