Custom Exhaust (NM + Magnaflow)

I got my custom exhaust installed today, and it sounds awesome! The two main components are the NM R60 cat-back exhaust and a Magnaflow resonator. There's a nice deep tone in the cabin, particularly at low RPM. I haven't made any significant trips yet to see if there is any drone, but I'll find out for sure when I drive up to MINIs in the Mountains in a few weeks.

I got the muffler shop to cut out the stock 2nd cat/resonator and replace them with the Magnaflow. I also got them to cut the chrome tips off of the NM exhaust and swap them for my black Dimisa tips (I'm reminded of why I love black tips every time I wash the car). I'll get a better look next time I'm under the car, but it doesn't look like they had to add any pipe between resonator and exhaust. I was too lazy to jack up the car, but I took a few pics while laying on the ground.

I really should have pulled off the Dimisa stickers before having the tips installed. I figured if they were going to put a sticker on it to begin with, then it would stay put.

Crummy picture of the Magnaflow:

I'm planning to take the NM leftover tips and make a couple of pen cups, unless anyone else has any other bright ideas.

Video is currently being processed by YouTube, but will hopefully be up soon.

Looks awesome! For aesthetics, the NM exhaust just can't be beat. It just looks amazing. Creative use of the exhaust tips. They might also make a good shade/shroud for a metal desk lamp.

I love the cat loafing in the background, BTW.

My eyes are tuned; I've got a pair of rug-cats that are loafing as I type this!

Anyway, nicely done with the custom exhaust on your rig. Looks great.

Excuse my lack of knowledge beforehand, but can those dark tips be installed to replace the stock tips, if one wanted to do so? Also, where do you get the dark tips?

yes. Depending on the manufacturer, you're looking 50-150 for the tips, then around 30-40 per tip to install.

Those are from DiMisa, I am using the same ones.

Thanks for the 'tip!' Which dark ones are on the red CM above? I see a few on their site.

Nice job..chrunck !
I've been eyeing several 3rd party exhausts...and NM is the best looking and you can't beat there quality. Was leaning towards the JCW, not only to stay within the mini family buy was hoping for a tune kit as well. According to MF, that's not going to happen...Just not enoug interest to pay for the cost of development. If that's the case...then my decision is head towards NM. I have there 19" wheels, along with some other misc
items...quality and service is top notch! Nice sound and awesome look!

Thanks! The sound has already changed a little from when it was first installed. There was initially a very low pitch drone that was a little obnoxious at freeway speeds, but I didn't hear it at all yesterday. I can only assume it will sound better and better as it gets more miles on it.

starman, the ones I have are called "Powdercoated Black - V4.0". Be forewarned--my install guy complained about putting them on back in October when I got the car because of the size difference from stock pipe to the tip. He had to weld an intermediate piece to fill the gap, so it cost a little more ($40 per tip, I think). The 3" or 3.5" is probably an easier weld, but the 4" fills out the cutouts really well.

chrunck… If I may ask…was the removal of the stock 2nd cat/resonator and replace them with the Magnaflow…to increase growl or lesson it.

Neither, really. Removal was to decrease the amount of restriction in the exhaust. Adding the Magnaflow was to help prevent any drone vs replacing the stock parts with a straight pipe.

That's really smart. I used straight pipe with my NM exhaust on my R55. It has quite a bit of drone at highway speeds. I'll be doing your Magnaflow mod on my new R60.

So….I'm still up in the air….it's either a NM Exhaust…can't beat the look. with most likely the magnafow magnapck installed…surely not looking for any drone cruising the highway or a shop near me who would to the install…works only on Mini's BMW an a occasational Audi…spoke highly of the Quicksilver made in England. Can be purchaesd direct or looks as Mini Mania is a distributor as well. Before coming to the states, from England he installed quite a few. I still think the NM looks better….still looking for a sound clip of the quicksilver on a countryman…plenty of other out there but not much for the R60's. and of course the QS is more dollars as well. Any thoughts anyone ??

Just to be clear I only had drone on my R55 because I used a strait pipe and removed my resonator completely. I love my NM. It is/was wonderful. Sorry still taking in present and past tence as I will be trading my r55 this afternoon for an R60.

I may however buy CooperCrap's R60 exhaust.
