How to Remove R59 3rd Brake Light

I've searched NAM and Google but didn't find specific help on removing the 3rd brake light on an R59 Roadster. I have the plastic panel removed from the boot but can't seem to get the 3rd brake light out. There are 4 sets of clips around the inside edge but I can't get them all depressed at the same time to release the fixture. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks, Mike

Don't know your car, but http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=63_0633 shows 2 screws.

Thanks for the link. Mine does not appear to be the same. I cannot see any screws. I am attaching a couple of pictures. One is just a rear shot to reference the Roadster light position. The 3rd light on the Roadster is near the top of the boot/trunk. Very hard to get to from the inside. The second pic is from inside looking from the side at the 3rd light. It is very cramped in there and hard to reach due to the bracing which gets in the way.

Has anyone removed the 3rd brake light from an R59 Roadster specifically? I know the R56 and other models are different.

Thanks

I haven't done it myself, but from the picture it looks like you would squeeze the two clips at one end together and gently pop that out a bit, maybe wedging it out with a plastic trim tool on the outside to stop it going back in, then repeat on the other end.

Thanks spiney. There are 4 sets of clips. I have tried squeezing one set but can't get the fixture to move much - not enough to get a trim tool in. Can't squeeze enough of the clips at the same time. I'll keep playing around with it.

Yea you squeeze the clips, be careful as over time the lens on the r58/R59 seems to loosen up. Mine did this and I replaced it.

I need to replace my light as well. Didn’t know where to go and somebody sent me a link to your thread. Were you ever successful? My first problem is figuring out how to get the liner off of the trunk lid. Then I can tackle getting the light out.

The rear liner has two screws near the latch, then the rest of it just pops of with a number of clips around it (it's hard to do without breaking at least one of them, though). Then you can reach the metal clips for the light, and as was mentioned, it's a bit hard to get all the clips. Start at one end and slowly move down the length of the light to get it out.

I know that you have long since got this fixed, but I had to repace mine and here is how i did it. Since the bulbs are LED and the whole light must be replaced, i took a plastic trim tool and just worked my way around the outside of the housing on the outside until the adhesive was free. Then just pulled it out, bending the clips in the process. they actually didnt bend, but broke free and I was able to put the whole thing back together once it was out (not that I need to). Anyhow, hope this helps someone.

I had to replace them on an R58 - it's basically the same.
Take the back trim off (there should be 2 screws holding the trim (4 on an R58) - the only thing left holding the trim are the trim plugs)
Use a big screwdriver to push the bottom clips in one at a time (pushing up the light to hold the clip in). Once you get all 4 of the bottom clips in it basically pushes out.

When you put the new one in - make sure you get those clips secured or it may fall out.

BTW - here is the BMW part - it only fits Coupes (R58) and Roadsters (R59)
