R59 Sunshade

As background, I use a sunshade 95%+ of the time the car is parked. I started doing it to protect the dash, and have kept doing it to keep the car from getting so hot inside in warm weather. You can go through a lot of cardboard shades (old school) or the mylar ones (get brittle, fall apart, have the binding deteriorate and spread itself all over the car), or you can pony up for a decent one that will last for several years. A single heavy duty MINI shade lasted my entire ownership of the original Clubman, same with the one for the Countryman. Miz hoonu has one in her F57, going on 4 years. So, when I brought the Roadster home, I ordered a MINI sunshade.

If you look up fitment for the Roadster on the various aftermarket supplliers' sites, you'll get differing answers. Some agree with shopminiusa and say that there isn't one. Others say that the one for the R5x models fit the R58 and 59. So, that's the one that my dealer got for me, part # 82 11 0 035 953. Well, there may have been a Coupe/Roadster specific shade, but this isn't it. It's a scosche too wide at the bottom, the angle up the sides isn't quite right, leaving a gap that gets wider toward the top, and it's too short by about an inch and a half. But it does clear the mirror, and if you unhook the visors, you can hold it in place. So, it will do.

MINI's sunshades are made for them by Covercraft. You discover this not just by resemblance, but by the Covercraft paperwork in the box. We had gotten a shade for an old Nissan pickup directly from them. To their credit, they sent me two that were not close to a proper fit, and then modified the pattern using my measurements, producing a perfect fit. So, when the MINI item showed up and wasn't quite a bespoke fit, I called Covercraft.

After 30+ minutes on hold, they answered. I asked if they had (or used to have) a model-specific pattern for the Roadster. If they ever did, they don't any more, because their fitment is the same for all the second generation cars (not the Countryman or Paceman). So no improvement to be had there, and they were pretty blunt in saying that they didn't do any remedial dimension-changing...no-way, no-how. While I'm slagging on Covercraft (not the quality; that's top shelf. I have one for another vehicle that's excellent), the price before you start specifying the vehicle or if you web search is $99.99. Pick out a vehicle, and magically, it's $120+. And that's without the storage bag. The MINI shade is much less, even at full-boat retail, and it includes the bag.

Rambling about to end: The shade you can buy today for a Roadster or Coupe doesn't fit perfiectly, but it will do the job, and if you buy the MINI item, you'll save money.

HTH.

Interesting...

I've opted for external shade a while back. It's not perfect (nothing is) that said it covers the entire window.
We got one for the windshield, one for the rooftop windows, and two screens for the windows.
It's done great for when we travel and the car stays in the sun a lot.
They're not super quick to put on but quick enough to get the protection for the interior worth putting on.
