What Is That Roadster Rattle?

I have a rattle on the right side when I drive (at idle, it doesn't happen), and I can't figure out what it is. Has anyone else had rattles that bug them? What did it turn out to be?

Mine rattles over there but from the radio usually....it's one of the red trim pieces on the door...the lower one, if I press on it the rattle stops. So I'm not sure if it's the same rattle you all are experiencing....if it is, it's an easy fix by the dealership (wife's 09 MCS had it too after a while). They just put some padding behind it.

I have noticed that the passenger seat belt, if there is no passenger, can vibrate against the right-side door and make quite a rattle. I fix it by simply repositioning the belt. I have the Recaro seats; not sure if different seats would have the same geometry.

I've seen that too. I have the regular sports seats. When it happens I just hook the belt over the side bolster and it's OK until I have a passenger again.

Hi Andrea-

Ok, it's not the seatbelt, eliminated that early on. I do as suggested and wrap it over the side bolster at times.

I installed the NM Strut Brace today, and as I'm driving around, I notice the rattle is almost gone...hmmm. It's down to an infrequent rattle now. Maybe the chassis stiffing it is providing is actually helping tie things down. I wasn't expecting that.

I spent some time driving on some roads near me that are cobble stone/pavers to help me locate the source of the rattle, and I found it. On my Roadster it is coming from the right side of the wind deflector that rides between the roll bars. It is just loose enough on the right side to rattle at times. Placing my hand on it stopped the rattle. I will to see about fitting something in there to cushion it. So, if you have the wind deflector and a rattle, check there first. Hope this helps

Steven, all these modifications you are doing....are you doing them yourself, or are you having a shop do them at your direction?

Both actually. Things like Intakes, Strut Bars, Wheels/Spacers I'll do myself. The exhaust, had a professional shop do it. My springs and sway bar will be done at a professional shop(IND). The coolant temp. gauge(JCW) I had installed at the dealer. They have a mechanic who is really good with electrics. He was nice enough to let me watch him work. The guy was truly a professional. I think the trick is finding good sources, ones that can match or exceed your expectations. They have to understand your obsession , and the good ones do.

Exactly. Kind of annoying in a 30K+ car.

I finally figured out a solution to the seat belt rattle. There is a stopper piece that slides up and down on the belt. Adjust it so that when the belt is all the way back to the pillar, the clip is at the very top of the pillar. Therefore it has nothing to rattle against.

I have narrowed my rattle down to the rods that operate the top latch. When I hear the rattle, I pull the handle and turn it as if I am latching the top and the rattle goes away!

I'll be in touch with the dealer ASAP to get a remedy...will let you know.

I just started doing this for the rear seat belts in my wife's Clubman. They were rattling constantly and this has tamed it to the point where it doesn't bother me any more.

I know this post is from a year ago, but was your dealer able to chase down and fix your rattle? I had to put the top up during a heavy storm yesterday and noticed a similar issue.

Roof rattle

Two things here.

First, no they haven't fixed it yet.

I haven't been persistent enough.

It's a rough riding sports car/convertible. It's bound to have some rattles. I wear hearing aids in both ears...perhaps it's just the amplification of a slight rattle that I can hear but nobody else can. My wife says I'm too picky...and like always, she's right!

I can put up with the rattle as long as the rest of the car continues to give me the thrills of driving as it has so far!

Perhaps if I had opted for the power top (which is now standard) I may not have anything to complain about.

Good luck to you,
Judscoop

Got an appt this afternoon to chase down two noises: one is a plastic-on-plastic squeak coming from the driver's side a-pillar, the other a drier, more aggressive rattle from the top, middle-ish area of the windshield surround. Could be coming from where the top latches on; could be from the bank of toggles and lights.

Both sounds are only in evidence when the top is up, which isn't often, but I don't see any reason not to get them fixed.

St_G - I have the A-pillar noise too. It's almost like a creak or a ticking. I noticed if I push up or pull down on the side of the top above the driver window that it stops the sound, so it's something to do with the roof flexing as you drive that pushes against the A-pillar. Hope this helps, please let me know how it goes as I'm going to have them chase mine down too. It's maddening.
