Today I heard a slight noise that sounded like the rear brakes. Pulled the wheel and looked like there was about 3/8" between the disk and what I think was the metal surface of the pad but really couldn't be sure if the 3/8" I saw was the brake lining material or actually the metal part.
How thick is the metal part of the brake pad?
I only have 10,000 miles on the car with about half that on the highway and I don't ride the brakes so I wouldn't think the brakes would wear out that fast.
How many miles should one get out of asset of brakes if driven easy with no out of normal brake usage?
3/8 of pad material is a good amount, should get at least 30k miles if your just daily driving it. Might have just been some noise, not necessarily an issue.
Oh Oh, that looks like the backing plate is pretty thick. Maybe then it's the backing plate I am seeing, just couldn't believe it with only 10,00 miles on it.
Just damn.
Might be rear dragging brakes ( caused by stuck brake cables ) or you park your MINI and use the ebrake allot and forgot to undo it all the way. Or someone like to pull the ebrake allot on corner turns
did the sensor go off and give you the alert light?
a pad as thin as my picture should have triggered the sensor
a noise from the rear brakes COULD just be a rock (pebble) got stuck in there. Unusual but it happens.
Any brake place can put the car on a rack and inspect the brakes. Nothing special about the MINI system ....
Ok, drove it to test and the noise was gone.
No, there never was an alert light come on. Is there a sensor for both front and back?
Anyway it must have been something else and maybe pulling the wheel to visible inspect caused whatever it was to dislodge.
Thank every one who took the time to respond to my brake concern.
We don't drive the Mini every day and the humidity has been really high the last two weeks and the disks had a lot of surface rust on them ( for some reason the rears were much worse than the front ) and I think this is what I was hearing.
Was afraid to get hard on the brakes the first time I drove it but pressed pretty hard on them the second time to see what would happen and the noise quickly went away.
So who really knows, just glad I didn't damage the disks and the pads appear to be ok.
Thanks for the update , so built up corrosion from moisture ? I have seen this when MINIs set on a dealership lots down south in the same spot for month or so.
