Looking at a R58

Hi everyone,

I am thinking about pulling the trigger on a Coupe S. I currently drive a 2011 Countryman S. The Coupe in question is a 2012 S with 38k and a manual transmission. It has the Mini CPO warranty up until 2018 or 100k miles.

Is there anything I should look out for or anything I need to know before getting into this? My biggest concern is mechanical issues, specifically, did the '12 Coupe S's have the clutch issues that earlier Mini's had?

Thanks for any help!

Just make sure that all the routine maintenance that is recommended by Mini at a specific time/mileage has been done. Most of the time dealerships wont do it when reselling cars, especially if the previous owner hasn't. This is a good thread on NAM that might help give you some insight.

Welcome Aseawood,

As an actual owner of a R58 MINI Coupe, the CPO warranty is good. The clutch issues are not that bad unless someone had rode the clutch or was hard on it. I would get an inspection also, MINI did inspect it under CPO , but good to have another look.

Routine maintenance is the first thing to look at and make sure you change the oil:

Items with the R58 are the dual viper stripe decals tend to be faded on the 2012 , but if they were replaced under warranty , should be fine.

Post up some pics and let me know if you have any other questions.

You asked about clutch issues on 2012's, I have 70k on mine. No issues.

Small sample size, of course. But just from following this and a couple other forums the "noise" on this issue died down a lot. Haven't read of an early (20-30-40k) clutch failure on recent ones, that I recall.

Check out "n18 oil wicking issue" - the oil sensor in the sump leaks particularly on 2012's.
When I took mine in for a service at 10k I asked them to do a visual check, the receptionist denied there was a known issue - 2 hours later they phoned me and asked if they could keep the car.

Thanks for all of the help! I'm heading up to the dealer soon (about two hours away) to put some actual eyes on the car. I'll let you guys know what happens.

Dealers just do oil changes on the 3 years maintenance program unless you have serious issues.

Maybe a brake flush but not much more. So for routine maintenance, It is very basic.

Yes, the dealership package , usually its wipers, cabin filter, brake fluid change, at the end of the 3/36 maintenance before it runs out. They usually just do an inspection and oil changes. Possible spark plugs on the JCW models.
