Smile R58 stories - Tales from the Coupe

I only had my MCS R58 for a few months and have some interesting reactions.
Let's use this thread to share these reactions or stories.

My wife took my car to work the other day. They had their office holiday party. My wife drove a co-worker to the party. My wife did something rare for her, she put the Coupe in sport mode then WOT till she got to 90 MPH on a back road. She scared the crap out of her co-worker, who to that point, thought the Coupe was just "cute" (I know - ugh on the "cute"). Tonight my wife tells me her co-worker and husband are going Saturday to the Mini dealer to test drive Mini's.

I was taking a friend for a ride in the new Coupe. After a few minutes he turned to me and said - "Is that your car backfiring?".

I also had a guy pull up next to me in a large pickup. He was waving his arms out the window. I rolled my window down and he said - "Man, I want to pick up that car and put it in my truck bed". I drove away quickly.

Filling up at the gas station is always an adventure. I'm always shocked by the wide range of people who come up to me and talk.

Cool Snake Road w/the coupe and a motorcycle pal...

ah.. story time!!.. i've had my coupe since late March 2013 and have only seen about 3 of them IRL in MN.

i have several pals back in my parents farm area that are crotchrocket bikers and love windy roads. in April, i went back to the area to visit some pals and family.

one of my pals begged me to take him on a run on this road we call "Snake road".. Basically a windy road that has two 90 angle turns and several big u turns...

we got in, drop it into sport mode, turn off DSC/DCT and put in manual shifter mode. hit the first 90 turn at about 45MPH, held 40MPH through it and kicked out the back end like a RWD car and hit the next 90 at about 35MPH and exited it around 40MPH.

we get to the top and i look over at my pal who is just white in the face.... all he says is.. 'whoa....' later that night he couldn't stop talking about that first 90 turn we took..

.........

i'm like most mini owners, a total car enthusiast and just love driving. i literally go for drives on the weekend to relax and think. Back in Aug, I was cruising around at 9am or so on a sat and was just messing around my car by keeping it in manual shift mode with sport mode enabled and dcs off. i had just gotten my exhaust upgrade done too.

was at a stop light and notice a big ole Ford F150 w/the huge exhaust and dualies.. then i notice him revving at me... so.. we WOT until we hit the speedlimit (50mph).. of course i'm nearly at the next light and the guy has a huge smile on his face and yells "nice go kart! she's got some zip and growl.."

..............

and of course the usual gas station and rest area questions and gawkers. the kids love the coupe and most have no idea what it is even. gotta love the rareness/uniqueness of our coupes..

Cute but Under-estimated

Had a guy ask me at a red light if the roof came off.

On another adventure I was sitting at a Red Light. This was a three lane road and I found it odd that as cars piled up to the light all avoided me. Several on the left and on the right as I was in the middle.

It was as if they could tell I was slow. The speed limit was something like 50 miles per hour there. I got thinking to myself, there is no law or legal issue with how fast I reach 50 miles per hour.

So I dropped it in Sport mode and gave it all I had at the green light. Reaching 50 very soon I locked it in to 50 and looked in the rear view mirror. Was as if they just started moving so far back.

Later, finally a car caught up to me. Blow his horn at me as he was in the right lane and gave me the thumbs up! I did the same.

Cute car but incredible fast thanks to the "S".

I've only had my car a month. 1300miles so far.

1) does the top go down? Asked about 20 times. Maybe I should get a sticker that says no. lol
2) it's so small. I answer well it's bigger then my miata was. I love that I can actually stretch my legs out
3) looks fast. I say get in and don't say I didn't warn you.
4) it's impractical only 2 seats. I answer. No kids. Nuff said. (And I follow up with 1 of 5 cars. I have NO transportation issues. )

I thought my miata drew attention but this thing is incredible.

Motor on my friends. Enjoy the smiles
