First Mod - Crave Speed Flexpod Fixie Mount

Just finished installing this - you can see pics here:

Sorry - I'm running out of gallery space here to post them all.

I also used their extra outlet option to install the power adapter. Not sure I'm 100% happy with how I ran the cable but I can play with that later.

I will be ading the ecoRoute dongle later on and playing with that as well.

Cool.

I've been trying to figure out if I want to do this.

Here's my question - When not in use can you swing the arm down somehow? I plan to use the scissor end to hold iPhone4s (and soon iPhone 5) but don't want the darn arm sticking up all the time if possible!

Looks like it came from Oxford! Nice Job.

I have the Fixie mount which doesn't move. They have options for ones with a join in there that would allow you to move part of the arm down and out of the way. I'm not too worried about people seeing my GPS mount in the car. I usually just leave GPS in the car to be honest.

I'm wanting to install this too - planning on using it to hold my phone. I read somewhere that the non-fixie version can move around too much when you hit a rough surface.

Can you give some more detail on where, how and what you needed to purchase to run the power cable? I assume this doesn't just go down to the cigarette lighter (my current solution)?

For the power I picked up the hidden power adapter from Craven Speed: http://www.cravenspeed.com/hidden-power-adapters/

It uses a crimp style splice to tap into the power underneath your existing power adapter.

Installation instructions for it can be found in the instructions for the mounts here: http://www.cravenspeed.com/mini-gps-mounting-kits/

I found the actual crimping of the splice a little difficult but it all fit pretty good. This installs a second power outlet hidden under the center part of the car underneath the cup holders. I will probably still fiddle with how I have run the power cord itself but the plug end is all hidden out of sight.

Awesome, this is exactly what I am after.

Thanks for the info, I'm going to do this asap. I also like how it allows you to use any device power cable provided it can plug into a cigarette lighter.

Hi Giarmdok,

I have been wanting to install an good mount to hold my iphone in my 2007 Cooper and came across the setup you had in your post. I really loved it!

I saw that CarvenSpeed mount comes with a Hidden Wiring kit right? Could you please share your experience with me if you did get a chance to install the hidden wiring (hard-wiring) for your device mount?

Craven's instructions for installing their Hidden Wiring kit on their website were very vague. If you have any other suggestions for an iPhone mount with nice hidden wiring setup please let me know.

Any pictures or instructions would be very helpful and greatly appreciated!

Thank you so much for your time and help!

Pree

I have the fixed one, as well, and like the location of the GPS/phone when in the holder.

Just ordered one; I'd agree that the instructions are vague, particularly about the console detachment. Any insight on that is welcome.

Also—may seem like a dumb question—but having the adapter plugged in to the cable permanently doesn't draw down on the car battery life? I've always assumed a connected cable was like having your lighter pushed in, in that it drew power whether a device was attached at the other end or not.

I haven't done the console part yet, but it appears pretty straight forward. Look at the "real oem" website for the console and it'll all make sense.

As to the battery draw down; nope. When the ignition is cut, the power to the 12v plug is cut. No battery drain.

BTW, I went "ala cart" so that I could mount my SG2 and my Garmin (on each side of the gauge). Came out nice.

I can't say anything about the install. During my first service, I asked my dealership what I needed to do the install and the next thing I know, they installed it for me for free.

sorry for bumping this thread, but care to do another review on this? how's your setup working out?

any problems with the screws stripping the tachometer? does it vibrate while you drive? your car been broken it yet because you have your gps visible for everyone to see? :P

planning on buying this, but it's a bit expensive, and i want to have all the info i can get. (especially concerned about the the tach screw holes getting stripped for one reason or another)

No complaints here; in fact, it's worked out better than expected.

Having the GPS mounted like it is, has been convenient for when I travel out of town. I get to the airport, pull the GPS, and toss it in my laptop bag (I keep spare power cable there). When I get where I'm going, I pop the GPS into the rental and I'm off. When I get back in town, it gets popped back into the mini at the airport parking, and I'm back up and running.

No jiggles or squeaks. I only had to retighten the arm once, and only on the GPS mount (Scan Gauge seems to be fine as it is).

Looks great I have the Duo holder. One for my iPhone and the other for my GPS. They basically go around the Tachometer One sits on one side and the other on the other side. CravenSports stuff is Great.
