Fuel Gauge Fades And Then Gets Bright

Hi, I was just driving home from work tonight when I noticed that circular orange lights on my fuel guage started to dim. They then started to get brighter and then dim again. This cycle kept on repeating its self. The tank is almost full. Is This a fault ?

Don't think thsi should happen... Blinking fuel gauge should only happen when fuel is low

It is just interference from a near-by UFO. Motor On.

Or, report it to your dealer.

Brightening and dimming of any electric lighting is a sign of a bad ground or a short. It also could be a voltage regulator problem, but that would affect more than just the fuel guage lights. Take it to the dealer.

We have already considered and rejected you for abduction.

Forget the other posters

The real reason is that there is a light sensor (little black dot) in the rev-counter. If it gets covered or the ambient light gets darker, the fuel gauge (and other lights?) get dimmer. Try putting your hand over it during the daytime.

Pretty pointless if you ask me, but not a fault

Confirmed this is the case. Today is the first overcast day since I took delivery and noticed this condition. Came here to find answers since it seems to be associated with the level of ambient light. Nice idea, but downright annoying! Maybe BMW/MINI could have dampened the reaction speed at which the intensity changes to make it a bit less noticable.

I'll have to tell my wife it's the cars inner intelligence manifesting itself. Then she'll never want to take it!
