"Tolerable" Sunroof Noise

Today was Day 3 with the new Mini and its sunroof. I've never had a sunroof before and don't know what kind of noise is normal versus what's too loud.

At speeds over 70mph there is definitely wind noise. It's not distracting, but it's fairly obvious once I get up to speed. (However, I can speak normally over the wind noise).

There is no loud whistling, and at speeds below 65mph there is no noise whatsoever. Is my experience normal for a sunroof, or should my dealer look at it?

Thanks, all.

In Oregon, it's called a rainroof...and so far, I can't hear the wind over the raindrops pounding on the roof!

That sounds better than my '03's sunroof. Any open window at 70+mph is going to creat wind noise. If it's pretty silent below that, I'd say count your blessings.

Well... it makes the wind noise when it's closed.

Arg. That's a different story. I thought you were talking about when it was open. Sorry. Hmmm, you might have it checked out then, just to make sure it's all adjusted tight and there aren't any seals bad.

I've got no whistling or anything like that... but I can definatly hear wind at hight (70+) speeds. Then again, it is just a glass pane vs. an insulated roof.

Also, I notice more noise from my runflats anyway, so it doesn't seem too bad to me.

There's an extensive thread on sunroof noise, if you want to search for it. The noise has been an ongoing problem for many owners, (myself included). I would say that if its quiet below 65-70mph, then you have no need for concern.

Thanks for the feedback. I've thoroughly searched out any sunroof threads over the past few months to try to familiarize myself with any quirks or issues before taking delivery. What's never mentioned, however, is the degree of the noise and what type is acceptable/normal.

Apparently what I have experienced is to be expected, and I'm totally happy with that.

Sounds reasonable to me. Me too I haven't had a sunroof in my previous car and this will be the first time.

My car still "on order" status and anxiously waiting

I have had several cars with sun/moonroofs, and none of them have been in any way noisy. My current GTI has one. There is no noticeable noise from it whatsoever when it is closed. IMO if the noise fom your closed sunroof is at all noticeable over normal road noise then there is a problem.
