Wondering what us R56 folks are getting as best-case fuel consumption averages?
I have an 07 S, now w/ 1000 miles, and get a combined 29 mpg & highway 35mpg (my averages not the o.b.computer.)
-Very impressive so far & I am not driving like a nun either.

Almost all city driving, my computer tells me 31.7 mpg. Next tank fill I will figure it out the "old fashioned way" I should say it's an 07 R56 MC

 

I'll resist putting mine up here as it's imperial gallons and might just confuse things.

I have 1500 miles on mine now, and am getting 29.5 with mixed driving. But my right foot is heavier then most people.

 

Mine has steadily improved.. It was about 29.5 according to the computer and now its about 30.5 - 31mpg.. I'm about 850 miles in.

 

my first fillup was at 350 miles and it took 12 gallons - about 29. The computer said 31.3

Your MCS tank isnt only 13.2 it is another 2.1 on top of that! Its read in the computer and on your digital fuel gauge on your speedo with the reserve!

 

The reserve does not matter. I filled the tank. It took 12 gallons. If it was full when I picked it up, which it more or less was, then I used 12 gallons to go 350 miles. The reserve does not matter.

 

I am still on my first tank of gas. Within a tank or two I should have a pretty good idea how the Cooper S is doing. Has anyone compared fuel economy with the sport button? From what I can tell, the button controls the steering feel and throttle response, but it may also control the turbos a bit. In non-sport, I don't feel both turbos spinning up, and definitely do in sport. So, it makes sense that in non-sport we'd get better fuel economy. I will have to test this to see for sure!

ps. I'd say my highway non-sport mode economy is around 35mpg, city a little more than 28mpg (based on the trip computer)

 

The sport button is reported to increase the boost by two psi (from 12 to 14 psi) between 1600 and 4500 or 5000 RPM.

not true. The "reserve" is nothing more than a light that lets you know when you've gotten down to your last 2 gallons - of the full 13.2


Take this as FACT (I know what I'm talking about) - the sports button tightens steering and increases throttle response by making the gas pedal more sensitive. Let's put a scale on the gas pedal so I can make an example. Lets call it 1 through 10.

Push the pedal to position 4 without sports button - that is 4.
Push the pedal the same amount to position 4 with the sports button on - that is like position 5 or 6 without the sports button.
Note this is true during acceleration only. Steady state pedal pressure won't make much difference.
Remember the gas is "throttle by wire" - the throttle is contolled via computer. Sports button just changes the computer settings. There is no mechanical linkage to something like a carb.

If you floor the pedal (position 10) it doesn't matter if the sports button is pressed or not - you are still at WOT producing the same power.

The sports button doesn't need to be pressed to get the "overboost"
function. Just floor the pedal and you'll have it.

The sports button will make the turbo seem more responsive because you are giving the MINI more gas with the same pedal position.

The sports button does NOT affect the suspension in any way.

With all that said I'll get back on topic. With 220 miles miles on my odo I've averaged 31.8 MPG combined according to the OBC. I don't drive like granny either. Watching the real time mpg computer I get much worse in town than on the highway - because I start off fast.

 

Not according the manual - pg 85 says the 13.2 gallons is INCLUDING the reserve capacity of 2.1 gallons.

 

My average is 31.4, according to the last tank. That's mixed city/highway/sport driving.

I have a 07 Cooper with automatic. Driven 700 miles so far of mixed driving.
Only getting 28 MPG. Could it be the crappy gas that we have in California?

Jerry, that's an interesting comment, and something I didn't consider when I posted my mileage. We have ethanol in our gas, and it's less efficient. I'm sure the mileage would be better without it, but it takes a 20 mile trip to the closest non-ethanol station, in the next county. You may have other additives that we don't have here in Texas (fortunately!).

 

I think ethanol is prevalent in many states these days and we'll be seeing more and more of it in the next couple of years. I've driven ethanol blends for years and not had any problems or gotten worse mpg because of it in any other vehicle I've had...I can't see why the MINI would either.

I would HOPE that MINI wouldn't be shortsighted enough to no include this in their engineering.

 

I'd have to disagree. Ethanol will give you worse gas mileage. If the gas you're using has a low percentage of it, it might not affect your mileage that much. Once you get up their in the percentages, you'll notice a difference. It'll be slight, and most of the time you'll chalk it up to different drving conditions.

 

At the 1500 mile OD point & getting combined 30 mpg. This is w/ 93 octane Texas 10% ethanol mix. Actually the ethanol mix is only a summer additive so we may be running a non-blend at this time.
-The Engine is fantastic!!

PS. Only four counties in N. Texas use the 10% ethanol blend in the summer, Dallas, Tarrant, Collin & Denton. I often fill-up in one of the boarding non-ethanol counties and I can tell a very slight difference in the car's performance. Smoother & 1-2 mpg gallon better sans corn-gas!

 

Again..back to the engineering point.

 

I'm getting 32.3 in my usual driving (mixed, judicious use of "sport"), and the OBC so far has been dead-on in calculations. On straight highway driving, but with plenty of stops, I got 36.

And as for ethanol, MINI says 10% is the max you should allow in your gas. Top-Tier providers limit ethanol to 10%, too.
