Maintenance question

Hi all, my brother just bought an 06 MC and the dealer included another year/maintenance. He said there is an approx. $2,100 service after the 36 months that is needed. This seems very high. My question is that if this additional service is bought from the dealer, they charge approx. $600.00 for the MC and $900+- for the MCS according to my brother. If this is true and the numbers are close to being correct, isn't it a no brainer to pick up a $2,100 service for $600-$900. I know its insurance/piece of mind but I drive a lot of miles and a $2,100 service that is truly needed at 46,000 miles would be really depressing. Any thoughts or information that could help. As always, thanks again.

I was told you could buy the 4th year anytime before 3 years or 36,000 miles whichever came first. So I'm waiting until I get close to see what other cars are costing for that extra period. Plus I'll know if I trust my dealer to do it.

My dealer originally wanted to charge me an extra $1000 for the 4 yr/50k mile extended full maintenance (for an MCS). I got him down to $800.

I'm not sure what it includes, but I think it's anytime your service indicator comes on..then that particular maintenance it covered.

What services are needed after 36,000 miles?

Obviously oil changes. there is also Inspection I (at 30,000-36,000 miles) and Inspection II (at 60,000 miles).

What am I missing? I'm trying to figure it out myself, if it's worth it.

I would greatly appreciate any info!

I got the fourth year of maintenance free on my MINI, but I'm really at a loss as to what services come due between 36k and 50k. Considering the long service intervals, it seems like it will only get me one more oil change (possibly two), and maybe some brake pads/rotors, if they're worn out-of-spec by then.

Is there anything else that comes due as part of the routine maintenance schedule between 36k and 50k miles?

The only reason I opted for the extra "year" of maintenance is that I drive roughly 17K miles a year, which means my 3/36 would run out in a little over 2 years.

Extending it to 4/50K should get me the full three years.

Year 4 or 48k mile mark is "inspection 2". Price may vary from dealer to dealer but $2k sounds extremely excessive. $700-$800 is much more reasonable.

Check your service book in your owners manual portfolio to see what it entails.

I struggle with what on a modern engine and car needs 2K worth of service at 36-48k miles. I have two hondas a 99 CRV with 87K miles that has had two sets of plugs, oil changes (also trans oil), air filters, wheel alignment, one set of new tires, and 1 front disc brake job, that's it. A 2004 accord with 36k miles and to date nothing but oil changes and air filters, and one wheel alignment. The CRV will soon hit me with a 700+ timing belt change job (100k).

I'll have a 2007 MC soon we'll see what the service entails, here again in a modern engine typically not much. When the dealer service runs out, I'll be doing some of it myself (plug changes etc) and will use a local bmw shop for other service (dealer 90 miles away). BTW the new BMW mini engine uses a timing chain, so no huge bill for timing belt changes.

actually the 02-06 uses a chain. The 07 uses a belt - that is supposedly rated for the "lifetime" of the mini.

Two new petrol engines with innovative highlights in technology.

The new MINI Cooper and the new MINI Cooper S come with two four-cylinder petrol engines each displacing 1.6 litres. Both of these power units are the first representatives of a new range of engines boasting innovative features from the ground up. They each come with two overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder driven by a chain. The engine block and cylinder head, in turn, are cast out of a special aluminium alloy.

I'll research a little more as I know I heard it had changed to a belt. I usually have spot on sources..

Whoa, I think there is some confusion here.

Inspection I is at 10K (pretty sure but just look it up in your manual). Inspection II is the second inspection, usually 15K miles later (25K), then it just rotates between those two inspections according to the computer

I got the fourth year maintenaince thrown in free too but when they were trying to sell it to me, the reasoning was that MINI clutches all go around 40K miles or so as well as brakes (which means rotors and pads). So maybe thats where the numbers are coming from as things like brakes are covered under routine maintenaince but not warranty.

The dealer could all be blowing smoke too because they just want you to spend the extra money upfront. I do know that the 10K service is NOT just an oil change.

Read the maintenaince book that came with the car and all will be seen
