Above glove box storage - not for US?

So, the storage pack option in Europe that provides the extra storage above the glove box is present on some cars but not others in the US? I went to the dealer today, and was told that the cars are not supposed to come with that storage area. He said that the first couple of batches might have them, but all subsequent builds will not. Has anyone else heard this? I liked that "hidden" storage area. He said the only way to get something there was to have the CD changer. He didn't think the storage area would even be offered as an option in the US.

On page 71 of my 2007 brochure it says the storage package is standard on the Cooper and Cooper S and will be available Q1 2007. The picture that goes along with it shows the extra storage above the glove box.

CD changer prep was listed as a standard on one of the early spec sheets. Not sure what CD Changer prep includes though retro-fitting that door at oem parts prices would make a CD Changer a much harder sell for a dealer. Maybe double. Call 866-ask-mini or email them. They should be able to give you a definitive answer.

Yeah, I saw that in my brochure, too. I even told the guy at the dealership about it, and he quoted some disclaimer sounding thing about the ability to change things even if they were in the brochure.

Just an FYI, our early Dec. build car does have that storage area in it. (Maybe no one cares, just thought I would chime in.)

Thanks!

The brochure states

The storage package includes a storage net in the front passenger foot-well, plus a floor net, two separate lateral separating nets and a 12-volt socket standard in the luggage compartment. In addition, there is also a separate tilt adjustment for both halves of the rear backrest.
Does anybody that has taken deliver of an R56 have any of these "standard" features?

Well, that would be a shame as the glove box is pretty lame. The demo I drove had the hidden compartment and I was rather looking forward to mine having it too ...especially since my MA went out of his way to show me the cool feature my car was going to have.

dean.

Interesting... all the demo cars I drove (both) had that extra storage compartment. I thought all US cars were supposed to have it.

I've seen several 07's and they all had the above mentioned items.

I was told by my dealer last week that older cars have it sealed shut due to some sort of problem. Might be able to ask them to open it up for you.

When i test drove the r56 last week, this was one of the more fun & handy features we noticed, so i really hope this stays standard. And if someone wants to install a cd changer at a later stage & this compartment isn't available, what would they do?

Get the CD Changer prep done at the dealer?

I wonder if locking this down is a way to lock you into getting the changer from the dealer.

The lockdown is to keep it from rattling. Evidently some of the first ones rattled for some reason. There is supposed to be a free fix in the near future.

That's exactly what my MA told me this evening when I picked up my MCS

My GP is in the dealer to get my xm etc. installed. They gave me a MC 07 loaner. I asked about it and the service guy said there was a recall and the dealers are told to lock them down until the parts are available to fix it.

There are some cool things about the new model though!!

I wonder how you lock it down? Could be useful when they allow it to work.

We drove a MC and a MCS Sunday. The MC had a functioning storage compartment, the MCS did not. The MA said there was a recall on the latch and they were being wired shut until it was resolved.

this seems to be the case ... my dealer told me the same after just getting back from Arizona ...

the storage compartment IS THERE on ALL cars, but due to its somewhat apparent flimsy nature, it develops rattles fast and seems that there might be a US wide order for all dealers to permanently seal them before delivery.

I think my dealer said something about opening them up later. Hope it wouldn't be permanent anywhere.
