R56 Oil Filter Casing question

Oil Filter Casing question
I know there's a FEW 07 owners out there. Can one of you verify for me the DIAMETER of the (exterior) oil filter casing, and whether or not is made of a magnetic material? This is in regard to putting a magnetic wrap on the casing to pickup the absolute finest bits of metal. I've had good results with these on other vehicles, also pan plugs from superplug.com. First time I ran the BMW K engine with the superplug, I was amazed at the tiny bits it picked up, and since then it's been nothing except this "dust" that is soooo fine you almost can't get it off the powerful magnet. We use one or both in all our vehicles, and I want to "size up" the new filter. Thanks!
FYI...dealer of my soon to be delivered car had no spec on the new filter yet.

Well, on my K series BMW engine I use the superplug www.superplug.com as the filter is internal, but I've just been informed that the Filtermag won't work on the modern BMW Mini filter. It's made to stick to the cannister type filter (spin off). So I'm still searching for something to use on the new Mini. So I'm still at square one for the new soon to arrive car. Guess I'll order a superplug for the Mini and see if they can deliver. Still interested in something for the filter itself, but first I need some technical info...is the casing steel? and if so, what is it's diameter?

Thanks. I am using the OEM oil temp gauge and it uses the drain plug for the sending unit. And the oil filter housing is alum. on my 04, so no go with a magnetic one.
I just checked the official press release from PSA (http://www.psa-peugeot-citroen.com/d...1103281940.pdf) and the new engine uses the same kind of aluminum canister as the current model. Oh well......
Good luck !

GAH! Same situation I had with my 62 Cooper! Amazed that BMW doesn't use a spin on filter on this new engine. Is this filter something special in terms of performance? I found the canister on the old Mini to be a pain to deal with, and in fact there are conversion kits to go to the modern filter. Too bad about this!

Back to the dark ages?
Hmmm. We recycle those cartridge filters in CA at places like Kragens, along with our used oil. I am already NOT looking forward to dealing with this type of filter again, as it always seemed to be more than a little mess with the 62 Mini Cooper, no matter how many times I did the job. Spinoffs are the way to go, and it's too damn bad that BMW builds such modern engines using that type filter. Maybe someone will get wise and make an adaptor. They make em for the early Minis. Meanwhile, I guess I'll just deal with it.

I am not sure something like that would fit. It wouldn't be able to intrude into the cannister, otherwise the cartridge wouldn't fit inside. Maybe get a thin magnet and just hose clamp it to the case. Not a lot of room on the current model to get the case out, so adding a magnet around it may make it too difficult to remove.
