Information at this link may help in terms of possible locations for the leak.

Downstream of the air filter with respect to where to introduce the smoke...

So looks like I could put it in the front air intake that goes directly into the air box maybe that would need the filter removed.
possibly after air filter.

Any air leak upstream of the MAF sensor would not register as an air leak, so your efforts should focus downstream of the sensor.

Initial test using a rag to seal the hose as the pipe off MAF is large hard to seal, repacked again was better but no apparent leaks I could see.
Where I thought they would be smoke was exiting around the rag but less second try.
initally used a funnel taped was worse, as advertised this smoke is nasty!
I could try the connector rear of valve cover passenger side smaller opening, do not know how fas the smoke gets?

Any oil leaks from the valve cover gasket or the PCV diaphragm?

Also note that a faulty MAF sensor can trigger P1497.

Valve cover was replaced before I started all the work sealing leaking oil leaks.
i was wondering if it could be a MAP sensor?
i may try another test from connector back of valve cover just to check valve cover then look at MAF.
Thnx

Enter last 7 digits of your VIN here. Then search for "Hot-film air mass meter".

Is the Bosch part # a direct replacement for the Real OEM part #?

Unfortunately P1497 error came back so maybe I need to use a smaller hose to insert the smoke get a more positive seal.
And PO13E O2 sensors, originally I bought new sensors not mini was told needed Mini O2 sensors that I got & installed.
i looked these are specific to location & wiring so cannot be fitted improperly? They were bought from Mini $$$ why would new O2 sensors fail?

You get much more diagnostic information by retrieving BMW fault codes. And an O2 sensor fault code does not necessarily mean a bad O2 sensor (e.g., issue could be a bad wire, DME, etc.).

Have a look at this AI-generated information. The code indicates a fault related to the downstream sensor.

Okay so in doing all the work I did the Cat removal to access the oil filter housing oil cooler so on so Cat connections the lower has that clamp the flex hose?
the wiring I had quite a bit of time to look at but still could revisit that. Car runs okay mostly for 100,000 miles, still having everything apart for some time there are lots of places in question. Thanks for your input never is as simple as it would appear?

Flex pipe

Continuing to look for downstream air leak P1497 & P013E, O2 sensor with my generic code reader.
smoke tests do not reveal much?
wondering about the flex pipe connecting to Cat & exhaust pipe as front end has a clamp the rear end does not, rear connector is loose?
Nor is there one listed in the fiche, but Ecs has a second clamp listed.
should I assume the flex pipe rear connector uses a pipe connector, is a flat clamp versus the one with a ridge?

otherwise I need to go to a shop have codes read!

Just an FYI - P013E is most likely caused by the unmetered intake air leak (P1497).

Thnx yes that is likely the codes come up after 15-16 miles.
just wondering if a missing clamp on flex hose rear to exhaust could cause those symptoms?
