My coils went bad again; throughout 50k miles I have bought 2 sets of four bosch coils to replace old failing coils. Discovered a leak in valve cover gasket and had that replaced, could have caused most of the failing coils. My question is, is it worth it to get "higher performance" bmw eldor coils to put in my mini to prevent future failure? Bosch coils never seemed to last for me or my friend who owns a similar BMW. Wondering if anyone has any experience. Thanks

 

I am running our bav red top coils fine. They tend to not like the heat and their has been many revisions of the OEM coil pack. My Genuine MINI ones failed, well one coil pack at like 50 or 75k. I just replaced them all and been ok to almost 150K now.

 

There is a technical service bulletin out for ignition coils. The Eldor coil is the version MINI directs their technicians to use. FCP Euro has a lifetime warranty. I've had excellent performance from the Eldor coils.

We have a lifetime replacement, even on performance parts were other places don't warranty them. I running the reds and they have been fine.

I ended up buying dinan coils. Same price as eldor that I could find online. Now I can brag to my friends I have a dinan cooper lol

 

Yep you need to get that badge. lol

 

So how does the dinan coils compare to the bav red top coils........

 

My personal opinion is that any retailer branded electronics are usually just a sticker on top of a stock part, and usually the priority is to make them look cool (read: be red in colour) over caring about function.

I haven't had issues with the cheap bosch ones from rockauto, but I have heard others do, so if you have issues, go for the OEM Delphi stuff.

I know with other BMW platforms, the Eldor B58 coils are a common conversion, with everyone recommending the Eldor version specifically. I'd also give them a shot if you have problems with the Bosch stuff, definitely before any coils that are a 'fast' colour or retailer branded.

 

what the difference red vs blue? Which ignition service kits come with the one stage colder plugs?

 

Color. Its listed per your make and model. I dont know what you have so i want to make sure you get the correct ones.
