Headlamp assemble questions
2007 R56; 134,000 miles
Yesterday I got a caution in the odometer, headlamp burned out -- was the high beam, driver's side. I bought a pack to two H13 bulbs and proceeded to replace the halogen bulb on both sides.
I opened the trap door at the rear of the headlamp assembly, twisted the halogen socket, and out it came -- both sides.
PROBLEM: There are three black wires coming from deep inside the headlamp assembly into the halogen socket. On both sides, as soon as I touched those wires, the insulation crumbled about 1-1/2 inches back. I separated the wires and covered the bare wires with electrical tape, both headlamps work fine.
In addition to the crumbling insulation on the halogen lamp assembly, the plastic lens covers are cloudy and scoured with road dirt.
QUESTION: If I replace the headlamp assembly on both sides, do the new ones come with internal wiring that replaces the deteriorating wires on the halogen sockets? I assume so. Replacement looks simple -- rewove 4 bolts, disconnect the wiring harness plug, slide out the old assemble, slide in the new one, install bolts and plug in the harness. HOW ABOUT AIMING THE HEADLIGHTS?
Cooper and I thank you.

If you have the stock halogen headlights they are garbage. Like, dangerously bad, in my opinion. I would suggest replacing them with aftermarket projector headlamps, or preferably the Mini 25W Xenon retrofit kit that ECS sells. The xenons are great but either option will be a significant improvement over the stock halogens. Note that the xenons will require coding at the dealer (or using an app like Bimmercode) to work properly.
If you replace the headlight assemblies yes, you will have to aim them, and you'll also have to do some adjustments to the mounting screws to align them to the body and hood. To aim, each light has a horizontal and vertical adjuster screw, you can aim them using the instructions here:
