Correct, unless the joint loses all its grease and then the joint self destructs from friction/heat.

 

S model sports package, I do not see any wiring going to strut assuming these are not electronic adjustable struts?

It looks no better than the front shocks I changed on the Defender 1984 last fall I think they were Original difficult to get off difficult to get spring compressed get that nut on!
looking at set all with springs /damper /retaining cap.

 

Looks like the arm aft of the CV arms has a rubber bellows on it also that is slightly damaged this is above the support arm which blocks the view from below. Also attaches to the wheel hub/ bearing. Stabilizer link?

how tight is the wheel hub nut, flange nut 134 lbs!
seems you need a good extension to remove this.
Then some.
