Cylinder liner flange wear

I got the inner liner flange wear out a little bit during installing the piston by the rings compressor sleeve. I wonder if this little damage causes any problems to the cylinder, piston or head gasket? Please see the photo below.

I think it should be fine...the cylinder does not rub on the wall and the rings stop 1/8" short of the surface.

I agree with MiniToBe. You could do nothing and be just fine, however, I would suggest you ensure the top and cylinder wall portions of that damage are fairly smooth when running your finger across it. The top being smooth for gasket concerns and the cylinder wall being smooth to prevent any hot spots. High spots tend to get hot during operation and could lead to detonation during operation. Some emery cloth applied to it should ensure there are no high spots. Aside from that it will be fine.

Thank you very much, Schovil 69. Another question, I will make sure the top and cylinder are smooth. I machined the cylinder head but do not get the engine block machined. Do you think get the block machined necessary? The engine has 40,000 miles and about half is track driving.

Technically, I'm not sure what you're referring to when you say, 'machined,' but I can make an educated guess it's the mating surfaces of the heads and block. If this assumption is correct and unless there is known damage to your block, no, your 'machined' head and block should mate up well.

Thank you for reply. You got it correct. 'Machined' I mentioned is that I resurfaced the cylinder at the shop.

With only 40K miles on the engine, I gotta wonder why it's all apart. Then with about 20K miles of track driving, there's a good chance the cylinders aren't round any more. Just replacing rings and waiting for them to seal is gonna cost you a bunch of oil and reputation at the track --- smoker. If you're replacing pistons too, the 77.5mm will be the same price as the 77.0mm and you get rid of all the cylinder defects.

As for the cylinder "ridge", there's a special tool called "ridge reamer" designed for the DIY crowd. Pretty cheap and easy to use. That little section of missing material shouldn't be a cause for worry, but a cylinder over-bore to 77.5mm would remove it and the ridge.
