Anybody Seen This Video?

I saw this on my feed yesterday. It apparently claims that the manual trans in our cars have an electronic tickover/creep at idle, and am dubious but curious after watching it, especially since mine doesn't do it. Anybody else know anything about this?

Isn't that the Hill Assist feature kicking in? I don't have a manual MINI so I'm just guessing.

btw - filming your feet while driving isn't all that smart.

Also if you love the feature of moving without hitting the gas pedal, why not just buy an auto?

No, hill assist just holds the brakes for two seconds. This looks like it automatically blips the throttle for you when changing gears. I'll have to give it a try but would work better on downshifts. No more "heal and toe" throttle matching. I know the new 2019 Toyota Corolla hatches have the "auto throttle blip" on downshifts.

thats normal he is acting like its some super BMW/Mini thing.. its not.
my 2013 MCS does it but its not super reliable. ive only played with it a few times. and most times the idle drops far enough im afraid it will stall so i start giving it gas or push the clutch in and go back to the ol fasion way.
i dont call it an auto 1st gear roll, its more of an idle compensator. since the idle drops as you release the clutch the engine revs a little to compensate. frankly i think most manual trans now days should do this auto throttle increase when coming out of 1st if the accelerator sensor isnt showing your foot on the gas.
its not enough rev to let you start moving unless you are absolutely flat or down hill
or mine doesnt work that well.
but really just about every manual within the last 20+yrs i have had you can start first gear without any gas if you ease off the clutch. not all though.

My 2011 MCS does something similar. It doesn't really "rev up", but once the clutch starts to dis-engage, the idle drops, and either the fuel injection or VANOS system takes over, in order to keep the engine at least at idle speed. I have not tried it in second gear, though.....

the guy in video is also facing slightly downhill. his "second gear" start from 0 mph, around 1:36, he releases the brake, and if u look top right at the bushes, the car starts rolling pretty quickly getting to 1 mph before he lets clutch out

To start rolling from a standstill without putting your foot on the gas isn’t unique to the Mini with a manual transmission. When I was learning how to drive, this technique was the first thing I learned. (Went to a large parking lot, and learned the feel of the clutch without using he gas). If you are really good, you can get the car rolling facing up hill without using the gas.

My Saturn and Yaris did this same thing. This is not unique.

My 2008 is an auto, and has now been gifted to my daughter but I'm looking to find another project and I was curious about this. Someone above mentioned automatically blipping the throttle on a downshift. My M2 does that (tho it can be disabled via tune) and I have to say I enjoy that most of the time. it also has the "anti-stall" feature where it will creep without any gas pedal. Does the Mini do that to match the revs on a downshift with a MT?

Interesting... If mine does this, I've never noticed. I kind of want to fake sick to go home from work and see if I can get my JCW to do this.

Kind of interesting. New cars don't like to stall. It's apparently not especially good for the emissions systems and even the cat. I wonder if Mini coded the ECM to detect that it was approaching the point of stalling and absent there being a foot pressing on the brake pedal blips the throttle to avoid a stall as the guy reports. Again, kind of interesting.

1st gear is a for sure on my 2013, 2nd gear will do it with a slight roll, but it only ever brings rpm's up to 1000-1100
i dont do it in first often but sometimes i will just to see it do it.
but again i only have done it on a slow to medium clutch release from a dead stop, never a quick release, for fear of the car jumping too much and then stalling while in gear which makes you look like a total retard behind the wheel.

Mine does this. It is just the ECU catching the car from stalling. It can be useful when slowly maneuvering in tight spots.
I have spent a lot of time fiddling with tunes on an e36 3 series, BMW has a table in that ecu for just about every situation imaginable to keep the engine running smoothly and just right. I can imagine a car that is a whole decade newer would have even more complex tuning.
