push button ignition

How does that ignition switch work?

If I get a replacement do I need a new key?

Is the eprom (antitheft stuff) on the key read there or is that passed/recognized by something else.

Can that be rebuilt or refurbished to get some more mileage out of it? I've only got 67k on my 09 mini s.

the push button start/stop module is plug and play. you can use your key fob with no issues.

did i understand your question correctly?

Yes, that's headed in the right direction.

Is there a way I can test the switch?

fyi - I have a hot battery (16mo old 13.9 v). Radio and door locks work. I don't see any bad fuses. No response when I plug/dock the fob. This just started out of the blue. Jiggling and swearing made no impact! <g>

I started removing dash components so I can get the switch out. I hate to spend money without confirming this will be the fix.

thank you for your help.

the fact that it doesnt let the car start or you have to jiggle it, is thee test... the module isnt expensive, it's worth the replacement.

Disconnect the module and reconnect it again, that MIGHT help to reset or release the key. Can you post a short vid of what's happening. Where are you located?

Fixed

I gave up and took it to a shop. Turns out the key went bad.

First time i have ever seen that but they acted like it is not uncommon.

Happy to be on the road again.

Btw they got me replacement keys for 1/2 what i had paid ordering direct from the dealer.

Glad you got it fixed. Most of the time the battery built-in can fail. Did you have the CA option also?

Replacing keys is a common disucssion topic. Can you share the shop name or anything else about how to save money on new keys?

Too late to help your situation. Also may not have have been the cause of you problem. The key fob recharges in the ignition. The manual states to use spare key fobs regularly to prevent the battery from dying.
more of an FYI for other reading this thread.

For MINIs without Comfort Access, this is true.

For MINIs with Comfort Access, the fob has a removable battery.
