Normal for Rockers Arms to Need Replacing at 102K?

Took car into dealer for ticking/rattling noise coming from left (pass) front side - figured it could be timing chain. They came back and said chain tensioner but my extended warranty (not MINI warranty) would not cover - 2nd time no coverage for a repair. So, I called the warranty company and argued for a while, to no avail. So, I cancelled the contract.
Told dealer to go ahead and fix.

Now, the dealer calls and says wait, there is still a noise(!). I tell them what I did and I hope it's nothing major. They came back with saying my rocker arms are worn and are causing the additional noise and need replacing. I tell them to skip the rockers and just put it back together. I can do those myself when I have a little time.

Is it normal for these engines to go through a set of rocker arms in 102K miles? I have NEVER had to replace rockers in any vehicle I have ever owned.

This thing is starting to eat me alive with repairs.

most of the minis i worked on including my personal one have ticking. it comes and goes though. doing some youtube searching, im lead to believe that dirty oil can clog the small tiny opening of the lifters. N14 engines in general are noisy in comparison with N18 engines.

Mine is the N18 - and it has always had a small ticking.....that's when I know to add about a 1/2 quart of oil.

Thanks for the info.

haven't seen a set of failed rockers on an R56 yet. Not even the customers with over 180k on them.

Thank you - that's what I suspected. This is the same dealer that quoted $199 to replace the plugs!!!

Prime Auto. Used Forevercar as the agent but I won't go back to either now.

Even my brand new replacement N18 engine ticks some. It has at this point 2000 miles on it.

I can't imagine any vehicle with hydraulic lifters could possibly have tick from the rockers.
