N18 thermostat out of stock nationwide?

So, for the 2nd time in less than 2 years, my thermostat has failed and dumped coolant everywhere.

So I figure because the dealer did the first one, and because its been less than 2 years, its still under the parts warranty right? Nope. Apparently there is no part warranty if the part was replaced by the dealer under the factory 4/50k warranty. Uhg.

Further, the part is on national backorder until at least July 18th. And thats a maybe. I've checked the usual suspects (azautohaus, pelican parts, etc) but they all seem to be out of stock too. So now the car is at my always awesome independent mechanic, waiting for someone, anyone, to give him a thermostat. Sigh.

WTF Mini? Its bad enough you won't cover the part, but further, you can't even get me one if I pay for it? How is something as common as a thermostat out of stock? I can waltz into the dealership any day of the week and get a thermostat for my 25 year old e30, but my 5 year old Mini is SOL?

Darn, missed you closing for the weekend by 30 minutes. I tried to one order online but I get:

"We don't have enough MINI Cooper Thermostat N18 stock on hand for the quantity you selected. Please try again."

I'll give you a call Monday. So far both Phoenix dealerships have supplied the wrong one and said the right one is on backorder when asked again, so I'd like him to give you a call to triple check fitment.

My mini has 28,000k miles (n18) already replaced it at 20,000k miles and I blew a code for this morning again. It's literally the most over engineered part ever they need to do a factory recall on it.

I agree. Of all the insanely unacceptable failures on the N14 & N18 engines, the thermostats are at the top of the list IMHO.

My dealer said there is a revised part that is being rolled out. That was for a Justa I had last month with 23k miles and thermostat code. Perhaps there is a revised art for the S (if it is a different part).

Mine just threw the PO597 code, so now I'm finding out this is a recurring problem, super! How much can I expect my mechanic to charge me for replacement?

Depends on what year car you have, what is truly the cause of the problem, and if they try to give you a scary enough number to scare you off. We've had customers come to us that were given numbers of $1000+ to do a thermostat.

We charge about $400-450 installed (depending on what year car).

I kept driving and in about 30 miles or so the CEL light went out and has not come back. Although I fully expect it to come back, but I'm not going to change the thermostat until it's on solid for at least a week or more.
