Why start 2x ?

Excuse me as I learn about these cars but I bought a 2009 MCS and after sitting overnight, I have to start it twice to get it to run. First time it acts fuel starved and spits and sputters. Shut it off and restart immediately and it starts fine. Now reading here I'm not sure but is this a symptom of the HPFP ?

Thanks

Also, once it starts for the day it starts fine. No Codes or CEL.

Yep, that sounds like a HPFP... It will only get worse...

Thanks. Would you trust a used one or go for broke with a new?

Thanks again

This is exactly what I experienced and, as stated, it will only get worse. There are two fuel pumps, one HPFP and a LPFP. I already had the HPFP replaced once and had another failure 2 years later. My current mechanic (1st replacement done by dealer) recommended replacing both (the LPFP was below optimal pressure), as one affects the other. You may want to research that advice, because replacing both will cost you well over $1K (unless you do it yourself).

+2. Very common thing. We are actually doing a write up on this issue to add to our tech articles. In my opinion, it would be best to replace with new since it's such a troublesome part. Here if needed.

We have it listed above with the pictures of the item, the N14 JCW shares the same with the N14 Cooper S, which is what you have.

Go broke only if you buy it from a dealer. The parts are cheap and the HPFP are very easy to install yourself, three bolts hold the HPFP to the head. I would never go to the dealer for any reason! The HPFP from a dealer cost $800-$1200, the same HPFP from ECS Tuning costs only $288, I don't understand why some people are pre-programmed to go to the dealer out of warranty!?

Why would anybody buy a used HPFP or for that matter remove a perfectly good HPFP?

Just ordered one. Hopefully it gets here and that's my problem. How long does it take for something to ship out from Pelican?

You should get an email with tracking information once it ships from the facility. Typically, 3-4 business days for ground shipping. If you don't see anything or have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.

HPFP once cost $$$$ and MINI extended the warrenty on many....
But the cost has dropped so much...
It is often not worth the effort and time to leave you car at a dealer for 3+ days to get it fixed...
Yes...they want you to leave it overnight to replicate the failure/bad start...
Then ORDER THE PART...
Then install ..then you pick up the car, and they tell you "urgently need " about $3500 in other repairs, but if you want to just trade it in, they can get you a "deal" and save you the $$$.

Have heard of folks buying NEW pumps for $300 or so...
And under ZERO circumstances WOULD I USE A USED PUMP...
And replacing the "lift pump" or tank pump, aka the low pressure pump IMO is a good idea.....
It provides "head" pressure to the HPFP, and gets worn from running the car VERY LOW ON FUEL....resulting in low psi...and in itself could contribute to the HPFP failure...

I'd rather just pay to replace it myself because Mini could claim it's the LPFP and not the HPFP and there goes your diagnostic fee of $150, the money you could have used to buy a new HPFP. No more dealers for me, it's there jobs to throw, "you need this and that". Their not going to be satisfied with just changing a defective pump, they want more! It's how their trained to operate.

I would be inclined to pressure test the low pressure pump first. Its easy enough and you will want to be sure you if you need to replace both anyway.

Got it changed out tonight. Runs a LOT better but I won't know if this fixes the hard start problem until tomorrow. I didn't even realize it was affecting the overall running of the car until now. Of course, this may change as the computer learns the new settings.

Just a quick update. It (HPFP) seems to have fixed my starting problem so far. Keeping my fingers crossed. Now, after all the reading here, I think I'm off to replace my Vacuum pump just to know it's new. Look for a new thread in a few on that. Thanks for everyone's advise.
