R56 Brake Pad Wear Sensor Damage
Brake Pad Wear Sensor Damage
Hi everyone,
I just finished replacing front/rear brake pads and rotors and noticed there was some damage to the brake wear sensor. I didn't have new ones to replace at the time so I put it back on anyways hoping the brake light will disappear. Unfortunately the brake light won't turn off.
So my plan is to purchase and install new brake pad sensors but I hear this light won't cancel itself out even after I put new sensors on and I need a special scan tool to reset this light, is this correct?

A GEN1 nor GEN2 require a trip to the dealer to clear a brake wear alert . . .
the GEN2 has TWO systems watching pad wear.
first is a simple miles counter like the oil change one. When this one comes active you can simply go thru the stalk and reset the miles if you want to ignore ..... it knows NOTHING about pad condition (but you'd be WISE to CHECK pad condition at this time)
second is the pad wear sensor which works by the sensor being in contact with the rotor and wearing down with the pads as mentioned above. When the pads get X thin, the sensor has worn to X thin and in the process breaks a wire which results in an 'alert' on the dash.
You can not clear THIS one until you reconnect the circuit break caused by the open wire. There are 2 ways to do this:
1) replace the worn sensor
2) jumper out the sensor by clipping the sensor off and connecting the two ends of the leads together. (search my posts for instructions)
a GEN2 recognises the new sensor with no special action either way
{for a GEN1 to recog' a new sensor turn the key to position one (on but not start) and the light should clear in under 60 seconds}
