40F coolant temp fluctuation...normal?

2009 R56 MC...

My coolant temp, via Torque / OBD II, fluctuates from about 180F to 220F randomly as I drive down the interstate at a constant speed (75-80...New Mexico)...A/C on or off doesn't seem to matter...throttle position doesn't seem to matter...outside temp doesn't seem to matter.

I'm trying to get a feel for the interval...but right now it seems random...every couple/few minutes is a basic guess...it'll stay at 220-ish for a couple/few minutes, drop down to 175 to 185 within maybe 30 seconds, and then come back up.

Is that kind of fluctuation normal?

Thanks guys...

Sounds like the thermostat is sticking.

Yeah that does sound like something weird going on with the thermostat. Once my car gets up to temp (220-ish) it'll stay there unless I'm sitting at a stoplight or something and then it will drop a bit. But just regular cruising it should stay a pretty consistent temperature.

It is not normal. It should only drop if you have the AC on max, or are really putting the spurs to it.

Mine just hangs out at 220. down to 218, up to 222, mostly at 220. Max AC it drops like a stone to 175 or so. Hit the boost for more than 5 seconds, and it drops.

If their is air in the system it will jump around (but that is if their is a leak or you diod not fill it up all the way after a thermostat change) but what causes it to jump the most of the sport button and in air conditioning more. If its super hot outside the high fans will kick on and the thermostat will open more.
