Obd II Reader

Just purchased one of these devices. I want to get an app for my phone that shows what is going on with the engine. Which app do you use? I saw the torque app and a few others. I have an iPhone 6 plus

Thanks for your help.

I use Dash Command, it's a free download and offers a ton of info.

I don't know if there are any apps that recognize proprietary BMW/MINI codes. If there are, this would be an awesome setup. If not, you'd be getting very limited information. For generic OBD 2 codes, you can buy a cheap-o scanner from an auto parts store which would do the same thing. To be able to read proprietary factory codes you'd need a tool like the Bavarian Technik scan tool: a hardware/PC software setup.

Which device did you purchase? There are dedicated OBD2 readers that you can get--either generic ones that can read and reset some codes, or the BMW- and MINI-specific ones that can read all of the codes produced by the car.

There are also "dongles" you can plug into the OBD2 port that will also talk to your phone, either over Bluetooth or by a cable. If you have one of those, then you can use apps like Torque. Those will generally be similar to the "generic" readers above; able to read many common codes but not able to see the MINI-specific ones.
