Popping and gurgle exhaust???
I know that Mini did away with that ever cool pop and gurgle exhaust sound in 2007, but did it return in the 2008 MCS and so on?? Was 2007 the only year it was absent?
Bottom line---which years does it exist? I love it and am looking to find an MCS under 15k and can find some '08s with, but there are some '06s with low miles much cheaper. If the '08 does not have the exhaust, I won't buy. Haha

with the n18 it depends on driving if you're driving aggressviely it will really start popping loud and often , between 2k and 4k rpms

IMO there is no decision to be made between any year and an 06. The 06 is by far the best year ever produced by MINI. I have an R58, R60 and an 05 R53. The R53 is the best and I will replace the R58 some day with another R53, preferably with an 06 GP1.
Out of curiosity, why do you think '06 is the best? I have owned an '06, 08, '11(JCW), '12(JCW) and now the '13 GP2. I am looking to downsize my payment. The GP2 is cool, but I do not drive it how it is intended to be driven. I baby it.
From a reliability stand point the '06 has shown to be the 'best'. Some people like the Supercharger Whine better than turbo noise (myself included). Some like the interior better, I like both for different reasons. I'll argue the 1st Gen's Sound system was waaaaay better than the 2nd gen.
2012 here that pops/bangs.
Slightly off thread but why does using the sport button cause the popping? I thought it only made the steering heavier and sharpen the throttle movement (plus in my case alter the change points in the auto box), if it creates pops that implies it also changes the mapping.

The last year of Gen 1 and they had all the bugs worked out. More of a grass roots car without all the BMW gadgets and useless electronics. I just feel it is the last of the enthusiasts generation. The GP 1 is the king of Gen 1's IMO.

On a side note, I've noticed the pops only happen after having driven the car for a certain distance. For example, if I only make a 2-3 mile commute in sport mode, no pops....if I stretch that to a few miles more, pops/gurgles all over the place.
The 06 was the R53 gen that did pop and gurgle. From 07-10 they did not and from 2011+ they will pop and gurgle in sport mode.
So glad I bought my 2011, and not the 2010 I was considering. The N18 seems to be more trouble-free than the previous powerplants. Plus, exhuast burbles and pops in Sport mode, and it also makes the steering heavier, and the throttle more responsive. I could do without the throttle map changes in Sport mode, but the steering feel and exhaust burbles and pops are just awesome! I am sure I lose some MPG in Sport mode, due to the extra fuel for the burbles and pops, and the fact that I drive a bit harder! Motor On!
You'd have better luck with a catless DP. I get them with my catless DP. However its not at the level of the N18 engines.
Feel like I'm missing something here.
The JCW used the N14 through 2012. Switched to N18 for the 2013 model.
