Brake Maintenance Countdown

I have a 2011 Justa. I have about 32,000 miles on it. There is a maintenance countdown when I start it that says I need maintenance in about 1,000 miles. I looked up the maintenance item in the on-board computer, and it says I will need front brake service. Is this correct? Don't these brakes have wear sensors that tell you the pads need to be changed? How can there be a countdown? I feel like I'm missing something. Thanks in advance.

The countdown is there because the brake sensor have probably started to rub on the rotor which triggered the countdown.

my 2012 all4 is doing the same yet i have about 50% pad remaining ... per my SA, it is a known issue that can be resolved with a software upgrade, but they will not do so until the yellow warning goes to a red warning

more info: besides the hardware break wear indicator at the pads, there is a software brake wear estimator

Can anyone confirm that when the brake wear sensor is tripped, the computer will tell me? It won't just countdown, but it will indicate it's time to change pads. Thanks.

The wear sensor is just a piece of wire that makes a U shape inside the plastic housing. The base of the U will rub the rotor and eventually break the circuit tripping the light on your dash. I tied mine to the frame last time I changed the pads, I check the pads every 3k miles when doing oil and a tire rotation.

The service mile countdowns are just a a computer calculated estimate based on your driving distance and a few other characteristic parameters the computer uses.

For all intensive purposes I honestly ignore 90% of what comes up on my tach and just regularly check the normal maintenance items myself.

32,000 miles is a bit low for front brakes. You'll probably get them under warranty. My fronts went at about 50K, rears were still OK at 70k.

Entirely depends how you drive though. Bought my car from a guy who drove 2 miles to the train station every day. When I bought it the front pads were completely shot at 16k miles.

Put Akebono ceramic pads on, with 50k miles (90% highway) on the pads they still had about a third of their life left in the front, rear had only worn down about a third.

The sensors are two stage. When the wire starts rubbing, you will get a countdown timer. Once the wire is actually broken, it will trip the light to red and show you the car on a lift. fwiw, when I reached that point on mine, I was able to drive another 9k miles.
