Has anyone used the MINI Challenge Vented Scoop?

I was doing some aimless browsing and came across this scoop:

I wondered, has anyone used this? And how did they like it?

Also at the same site there was the scoop cooling vent:

Any thoughts on either of these? I linked both pictures to the site I found them at.

I remember reading that you have to enlarge the stock hole in the hood to fit the vented scoop. I'd get it if I had the funds, it looks nice on the challenge cars and is functional as well.

I have got the second one there. It is nice but, does not fit the LCI hood without some modification. My mechanic that replaced my hood hacked mine up to make it fit. I wasn't happy about it but, it is too late now.

Do you happen to know what part of the hole needed enlarged?

Take a look at this thread on minitorque, it has a picture of the necessary hole enlargement. Its to the layer underneath the scoop.

The vented scoop is to lower under hood temps during racing conditions (it's used on the Challenge cars and the 24hrs of nurburgring Mini Coupe).

I believe the curved cooling vent was used in the Challenge cars before the updated vented scoop was introduced.

I am using the scoop cooling vent right now.

It does work. I've done before and after test using a infrared thermometer on the surface tempurature of the hood and turbo oil lines, it is significantly lower. The air actually get push down onto the turbo heat shield and turbo oil lines.

How much is significant? If you don't remember hard numbers, an estimate is ok.

Vented scoop

FYI if you want to keep engine bay temps down that's ok but using the second part shown above to cool the turbo all you're doing is robbing your self of power. Turbos make the most power when they are red hot and stay at a nominal temp, cooling the turbo is not good, cooling the oil lines not a bad idea but use an oil cooler for that. Just saying.

I would suspect the MINI challenge series knows a thing or 2 about racing the MINIs. I don't think they just slapped it. I'm sure there was a process before they got to production level and are now selling it.

FYI

The scoop is pushing air to the heat shield, not the turbo. I never said anything about cooling the turbo. The purpose of cooling the oil line is not to reduce EOT but to prevent the lines from getting too hot. The scoop lowers the tempurature of the oil line so oil do get cooked and destroy the o-ring. The oil line is known to leak oil due after millions of heat cycles. That is also why MINI had a recall and added a heat shield on all the N14 engine.

I saw a difference of 30C on the "surface temp" of the oil line and 17C on "surfance temp" of the hood scoop. Your temp may vary depending on where you live.

Engine Oil Temp remains the same according to my gauge.

Just saying...

It's a modded R56 S: http://www.motoringfile.com/2007/08/...jcw-challenge/

The 1st gen Challenge series was R53: http://www.motoringfile.com/2006/04/...at-snetterton/

If you look at the "R56 Super Cooper Jr build" thread on here, you'll see why MINI created the vented hood scoop.

I manufacture and run a JCW Challenge style vent scoop on my R55:
It keeps ambient air temperature and the front half of the engine bay cooler when in motion; especially during the hotter summers.

I run this US made challenge style scoop part mentioned above and I feel it has to help the under the hood temps.
