R56 Help! Found two Cooper S CPO's - need help deciding :)
So, maybe this is luck or too good to be true, but I found these 2013 CPO's in Denver. They were service loaners. One has 4318 miles and the other has 5257. They are almost identical (in specs and price) but the lower mileage one has the JCW tuning kit, black wheels, stripes and body colour roof/mirrors. The other has adaptive lights and white roof/mirrors. I am leaning towards the JCW since it is lower mileage, has the stripes and just seems the better deal of the two. How much does the JCW tuning kit affect mpg?
Anyway, any pros/cons to either?

First, the S is overpriced by about $3K....the JCW by about $2K. Then I must ask the question....why are you concerned about mpg between the two cars? Even if is a 10% difference, then if you drive 12Kmiles annually and pay $4.5/gal, then the JCW ends up costing you about $128 more in fuel per year. You will make that up and then some on resale value later on.
So the question can't be the mpg....if you are worried about the $128 of increase fuel cost, by a Prius.
But if it were me....the JCW all the way and I would do the deal at $22K.
Just my .02... or .05 now since Obama has been in office.

I think and KBB also think both are good deals, the JCW is the best deal and looks the best IMO . Not sure where other poster got values from. CPO is the only way to buy a used MINI IMO, warranty to 6 yrs and 100K . I'd buy that JCW at asking price but I got $2k off my CPO that was allready marked down but you know how those sale price tags don't mean much.

I'd buy another CPO again and 95% sure I'd not buy a used MINI unless it was CPO.
Thanks for the replies! Yeah, they both seem like good deals, especially the JCW. I would have preferred a manual though, but oh well. I was a little leary of the 'service loaner' status, but figure with such low miles and the extended warranty, it's probably no worse than miles put on in private ownership. Hard to tell I guess. The carfax is clean on both too.
Guess we'll see what happens. It's either this, buy out my current lease or an F56 Cooper. Choices, choices...

The interesting thing is that the JCW's MSRP is $34,995 and the other is $31,545 but the JCW has almost 1,000 miles less and is $16 less.
Maybe there are less customers interested in that configuration?

Just to confuse things, I agree that the stripes add a bunch on the car, but I'm not a fan of the black wheels. I would see if they would put the silver wheels on the car and go with the first choice.
If the other car had a black roof instead of white, then it would probably be my preference. One of the unique things about MINIs is the different colored roof, IMO.
You can also drive both and see if you notice a difference with the tuning kit. Some people say that the tuning kit muffler drones, check that out.
Have fun,
Mike

It's always interesting to me when people recommend against buying a loaner vehicle because of the additional wear and tear. As though everyone who gets into one will want to see if the transmission can be put in reverse on the freeway.
When I got a loaner vehicle for any of my cars, I'm usually doing so to maintain my daily routine; not because I've taken a day off to take the car on an autocross. I get stuck in the same traffic, parked in the same place, and load it with the same groceries as I would my own car.
And as for those people who may test the acceleration on a "new" car, I'm certain the car can manage without breaking down.

You do realize that one with the JCW Tuning Kit is NOT a factory JCW, but an S with a dealer installed "tuning" package which adds (only) 8-9 hp over the stock S. It is in no way, shape or form comparable to a factory JCW.
I would look at both and pick what you would consider to be the best one for your tastes and not get hung up on the one only because it has the JCW Tuning Kit.

Slight misinformation from Cerenkov! ^^
The tuning kit on this model adds 17HP (181 to 197) and more torque. The difference is pretty large and very noticeable. The finished product is way closer to a fJCW than stock S. I've compared them all. The HP has been said to be understated as to not encroach on the fJCW specs.
Then realize that the kit keeps you in warranty, as well as being pretty much the only tuning option available for an N18 motor.
Mini-Mine, I saw your PM about the kit. It adds a new JCW airbox, new exhaust, and new manifold. The exhaust is particularly cool, it has sweet engraved JCW tips that look even better than the fJCW tips. Then of course, you get the software update which is 90% of the package, and an engraved JCW plaque with serial #on the top of the motor. And grill/boot badges as well!
Not sure if you have test triven both yet, but if you compare, the JCW kit will make your decision easier! Msg me again if you have any questions!

It's not misinformation, it is the information listed on the MINI website. I'm inclined to believe the official website.
http://www.shopminiusa.com/PRODUCT/8...RKS-TUNING-KIT
Quoted from the website - this is for a tuning kit for a 2013 MCS. The specs do not list a new exhaust manifold.
The John Cooper Works tuning kit drives the MINI Coupe and Roadster to completely new heights of performance. The kit boosts the output of the Twin Scroll turbocharged engine to 189 hp (SAE) (141 kW). The maximum torque is 185 lb-ft between 1750 and 5000 rpm. In fact, with the over boost function, temporary peak values of as much as 200 lb-ft are possible in the range from 1750 to 4500 rpm. The kit includes for improved power output new air filter housing and new exhaust system which improves exhaust guidance flow. The combination of the new air filter and the exhaust provides sportier interior and exterior sound. For a more aggressive look, the tips of the dual exhaust are significantly larger than the stock exhaust tips. A special ECU programming provides faster throttle response, leading to an increased performance feel. John Cooper Works badging on the front grille, the boot lid and on top of the air filter are obvious signs that the car is powered by a JCW engine. John Cooper Works tuning kits are designed and developed according to the guiding philosophy that only serious tuning can satisfy the high requirements of MINI. This particularly applies in terms of endurance, effect on other components and compliance with statutory regulations. After all, tuning is not just a question of improved performance but also of quality and safety. The Tuning Kit can be installed on MINI Coupe and Roadster with manual and automatic transmission. This item can not be ordered online. Please call us to place an order!

Thank you both for the info. Seems it is the way to go. They won't switch out the wheels, but I can live with them. Planning to be in Denver weekend of June 6th to visit friends, so if that pans out will test drive then.
I can see them saying no right now about the wheels but they might agree to the switch when your about to close the deal.
I'm diggin' the all blue w/blk wheels. I'd like to have the JCW tune kit. . well, just because. Of course, I like the other as well with the silver wheels. If the wheels are different sizes they may have to hook up the computer to reprogram for the different size. When I bought my F56, the dealer had zero stock of fully loaded R56s so get 'em while you can!! Good luck!

The wheels are exactly the same style and size, just one is black and the other silver. We'll see what they look like in person and if they are willing to switch later if need be. I can live with the black if I have too. Only big change is going from a manual to auto, but not much choice there...
Ha yeah will do if I don't like them in person. I haven't seen them on any other Cooper, so just not sure.
Cerenkov, sorry but that has been confirmed here as outdated info. That text was correct for N14 engines before
the LCI update to the N18 in 2011. The 2011+ kit is exactly as I outlined it (181hp to 197hp).
It absolutely includes the exhaust manifold, as it is currently installed on my car and shown in the parts diagram
I received when I installed the kit. Zero disrespect, but I am 110% certain my info is correct as I have researched
this thoroughly. While typing this, I just confirmed it with a good friend who was my MA when I ordered my car.
I'm sure you may disagree with me, but please look at some older threads where they confirm the
existence of the outdated verbage on the website. How it could still be wrong is beyond me...
If you look at http://www.waymotorworks.com/jcw-joh...-for-2011.html
you will see a picture that includes the manifold, as well as saying "2011 or newer".
Lastly, a quick google search turned up this thread confirming the TK change-over in 2011
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ir-filter.html
Class is dismissed, any questions let me know!
