Maintenance thread?

I'm sure there is one but I didn't see it.

Anyway I am looking to do some fluid changes soon. Oil & transmission. Maybe even brake fluid flush.
I have used royal purple in my cars for years. Ok to continue this with a mini?

Also Mann oil filters or is it ok to use another brand? I live near my dealer so I can swing by and pick up a filter if fram or whatever at auto zone isn't sufficient.

Spark plugs oem or something better? Iridium?

Royal purple in my transmission? Is Redline better?

Anyway thanks for any help.

Royal Purple for engine oil is fine. A lot of us have been running 0w-40 European spec oil weight (it makes us feel special) so I don't know if Royal carries that yet or not. But 5w-30 is more widely used and accepted. Mann oil filter is good. I use the OEM MINI filter myself. I would not use Fram or any other cheap filter.

Spark Plugs, that depends on what you have done or will do to your car. If you will be tuing then, a step or two colder wouldn't hurt. If you plan on keeping it fairly stock (i.e. only doing simple exhaust and intake mods) then stick with the regular Iridium plugs.

I recently used Redline D4 ATF if my manual transmission. I'm very pleased with the result. I got the ATF since it met the GL-4 level of gear protection and the winters here are very cold. As long as Royal purple has a GL-4 trans fluid, you should be fine.

Good luck with your maintenance needs!

We have no clue as to whether you own a Mini Cooper S or a non-S model, until we have that info it's hard to provide you with any links. Also what's the mileage?

I use Royal Purple for engine oil, Redline is a very high quality transmission oil. A lot of BMW's use it.

If you go to the Modifications heading under 2nd gen, there is a topic on how-to. Searching that will give you info on fluid changes and such.

Have fun,
Mike

Thanks for all the replies. I'm sorry I thought my profile has my cars? It is a 2010 Mini Cooper S. Bone stock. I would like to mod it some but as this is my fiancés DD she isn't too thrilled about me spending money on frivolous things... I have 3 other toys she lets me play with.
It's about to turn over 30K.

With only 30k on the odometer you can use the spark plugs for many thousands of miles, Iridium is the second dense stuff on earth. When I changed my plugs and got new ones at 50k I didn't notice any difference in power or gas mileage.

Thanks. I know this car belonged to a snow bird and it was only driven approx 7K miles/yr. I may pull the plugs just to have a look at them.
I'm mainly concerned about the engine and transmission fluids.

I do the brake and coolant flush every two years. Also, spark plugs I went with the NGK 5992, and I always stick to do them around 55k miles on my MCS(JCW is recommended every 30K miles). I would eventually do the fuel filter around 50K miles since your MINI is 4 years old and has 30K miles on it. Royal Purple is really good for transmission flushes, I plan on doing that with RP in a few more thousand miles. With all that done, you should be fine. And of course good job sticking to OEM oil filters, don't use anything else but that. Enjoy your MINI!

And while you are at it, check your valves too to see how bad the gunk stuff is stuck on there. Walnut blast is definitely coming up for myself as well, I just know the 07-10 MCS models got them pretty bad.

Make sure your transmission oil is 75W90 because as your engine heats up so does the transmission oil and that's why you'll need the heavy weight! I have Redline MTL 70W80 and trans has never shifted smoother, I realized that I need to go with a higher viscosity than what I have in there now. I ordered the BMW MTF LT4 from ESC Tuning which is where you can save a lot of money on genuine Mini OEM parts for your Mini when you get tired of paying marked up dealer prices. Forget about replacing the fuel filter because it's HUGE (as a brick) and will last easily 100k, never heard of anyone having to replace one before.

I use Royal Purple 5W30 oil and change it every 5k miles, be aware that your will burn some oil in-between oil changes. Check your oil every other gas up, seriously! When I mostly do city driving on a tank I burn through more oil than I do freeway driving, on average I burn 1.5 quarts of oil every 1500 miles. Your Mini may vary again on how you drive and where you drive. You'll need your valves walnut blasted every 30k-50k, get used to it. That's for most direct injected engines.

I hate hearing about some poor guy drives 7000 miles without checking his oil only to find there's only 2 1/2 quarts in his engine, by then it's too late! I usually go through 2.5 quarts of oil between oil changes, plus side is your engine gets refreshed will new clean oil.

Here are my options for transmission fluid from my local auto parts store...
Lucas Synthetic 75w-90
Lucas heavy duty high performance 80w-90.
Royal purple max gear w/friction modifier additive 75w-90.
They have royal purple 5w-30 engine oil, so I'll be picking up some of that.

As far as my transmission fluid options should I go with any of those or find something else?

Thanks for the help.

I'm not familiar with those other brands of transmission oil, most members either go with Redline, Amsoil and BMW oils.
